Peugeot Elddis Autostratus

Hello,

After a week I had no response posting in the general section, so hopefully this is the right place for some of my queries.

I am new to the forum and wondered if there were many users of the Peugeot Elddis Autostratus? I am looking at buying one when I get to Britain in June this year, about a 2000-2004 model, turbo diesel - about 14,000-17,000 GBP.

I have read a few horror stories about this vehicle but am still attracted because of its affordability and other features. I would like to know a few things if possible:

1. Any major problems with the 2.5 diesel motor?

2. How many miles to the gallon or kms per km?

3. What is it like for parts and service a) in Britain, b) europe, c) south america?

4. What are some of the major things to look out for if I am going to buy one that is 6-10 years old?

5. Would it be much cheaper to buy in France and bring it across the channel?

6. Are RV's very expensive to take from Europe to South America or Central America? Which is the best departure point in Europe?

thanks for your time,

M.

we had a elddis autostratus and it was a disaster. from wood shavings in the water tank to a bed that was five ft seven long.what sold it to us was a fab. bathroom right across the rear, the roof buckled in hot weather.and dont even think about service from elddis'they did not want to know.any bits from any mass producer, are always a problem,in u.k let alone abroad.ours was a 2000 model so may be things have changed.tough one to call.if i were you ,i would go for a large van based machine as parts are always available in obscure places .the caravan bits can be bought as needed.the old mercs seem a safe bet.m.p.g? its the van again, but space is the issue of course, but would prove a tougher choice in rough use.thats it good luck whatever.

We have had one of these since 1998 and it is and has been a very good van. Very well built e.g. all screws are stainless steel. Never had a problem with it, parts are easily obtainable even at its age. We like it so much that we have not found a new one that we prefer hence why we have kept it for so long. Servicing is no problem in UK or Europe.

The engine has not skipped a beat in 80000 miles and the only repairs have been a new exhaust, cost £69, a split inner UJ boot (£39 fitted) and just a month ago a new radiator (cost £72), quite acceptable for it's age and milage I consider. There have been know gearbox fifth gear problems that seem to be due to either poor quality heat treatment on the fifth gear set (easily repaired without taking the box out) or possibly lubrication due to the method used i.e. splash. Ours has not suffered from any problems of this though our friends did at 22000 miles. It seems that less used ones suffer more than regularly used ones so there may well be some weight in the lube theory though our friends one was definately poor quality heat treatment.

I would thoroughly recommend the van.
