Rear wheel drive motorhome

I am desperately looking for rear wheel drive (twin or single rear wheels) motorhome. It must not be a panel van conversion as this is what we already have. It also needs to be approximately 20ft in length. The reason for being so specific is that we need it to be able to tow on grass as well as roads. I have tried lots of dealers, but they are not really all that helpful. Please does anyone have any suggestions.

Hi Jean, welcome to the mad house. :-D

There are some rear wheel drive vehicles out there, Ford do both twin and single rear wheel drive, but the problem as you've found is that there aren't that many of them. I suspect the twin rear wheel drive models will only tend to be on larger motorhomes - we used to have a Rimor which was just shy of 24ft long on a RWD Ford (Mk6), not sure if they do a shorter version (also known as Kentucky brand).

Hi Jean,

How new do you require, The MK6 Ford base Autosleeper Amethyst is rear wheel drive , has the fibre glass Monocock ( not sure of spelling ) body, these build up to 07 plate I think, and this type of build has now finished due to the expence in manufacture, but well made, no dought others have there own opinions. last one I saw for sale was at Stewart Longtons in Chorley a few weeks ago.

Good hunting

Regards

Alan

Hi Jean

A Mercedes base will give you rwd. I'm very pleased with my Hymer S660 which is 22' (2 dbl beds, - one over the motorcycle garage, - and a "sitzgruppe" for 6 or 7)

If you chat to a MB dealer, they can tell you when model numbers/ carrying capacity changed but my own truck is from 2000 when the choices were Sprinter 412 (4 wheel back axle,- carries 4,600kg) or Sprinter 312 (2 wheel back axle, - carries 3,500kg)

I'm not up to speed on the modern numbers and loads but I think the heavyweight now carries 5,000kg or more

If you're searching second hand columns, Hymer used to classify MB based vehicles as S class , and Fiat bases were B class. This of course causes all manner of confusion because we Brits like to call integrated motorhomes "A" class

As you're planning grassy journeys, consider the option of a limited or locking slip differential.

Hi Jean, I have a CI on a Mercedes 316cdi with the Sprintshift gearbox and it's perfect for me but it depends on how much you wish to spend. Just see as many as you can before making a choice. B-)

Hello Jean & welcome t the forum.

I think you may struggle with a van at 6m with rear wheel drive.

As Mel B posted the Transit will be your best hope.

The shorter vans tend to be FWD, but it may be worth checking out the following to see if any are RWD as a starting point.

The following are all Transits.

Also may be worth while contacting Marquis to see if any of their "County" Devon or Northants models on the Mercedes are RWD, or can be ordered as such.

Good luck

Hi Jean and welcome to the forum.

Try looking out for an Auto-Trail on a Mercedes as they are all RWD. Possibly something like this one on eBay.

(Watch out though as this dealer has a much newer AT that has been 'butchered' by a previous owner! We've been to see it!)

Hi,

Technical input time;

All Mercedes vehicles are rear wheel drive and always have been apart from the early Vito van but you are extremely unlikely to come across one of those as a camper!

All VW LT chassis are also RWD

Iveco have only ever made RWD Daily chassis

Watch out for Renault Master. They have just launched a RWD version of the Master and it looks and drives really well. Too early to say about reliability but the stakes are high for them, so I expect it will be good. This will be available as 3.5T and 4.5T and while they all have twin rear wheels at the moment, singles are on the way. That will keep the weight down, but compromise the stability and handling somewhat.

Nick
