Greetings from Croatia

Greetings from a very wet Croatia. We managed to see Dubrovnik on a sunny day and it was worth the effort.

We spent two nights at Auto Camping Kate at Mlini just outside Dubrovnik and visited by boat, a very nice way to see Dubrovnik.

It rained a lot last night and we were just able to get off the lower section of the site. I hate to think how some of the big units made it out. I had to reverse up a slope that resembled a small waterfall. The only reason we were in the lower level was the French had an escorted tour staying for four nights and they took up all the high level.

Tonight we are in Camping Nevio at Orebic on the Peljesac Peninsula and its still raining. We are on a small pitch overlooking the sea and the site is very crowded, mainly with Austrians and Germans. The site is excellent with first class facilities and a restaurant.

We are having a few days R&R before moving on to Split.

Safe travelling.

Don

We are heading there this August but not sure which part yet. Any reccomendations are highly appreciated Don. Looking for a site that our kids can fly out to join us so need to be near an airport for them near the coast. They may be in their 20's but they want a beach holiday.

Don't think they will ever grow up!

Hope it stops raining for you soon Don

Camping Stobrec?  Pleasant site, quite good, though well ventilated :-), facilities.  Try to get as far from the main road as possible (towards the right as you drive in from reception), there are quite a lot of late night emergency vehicle movements.  Walk out of the site, turn left to Stobrec, along the seafront, and there is a half reasonable supermarket.  Bus for Split on the main road by the traffic lights.  Split old town, which is basically Diocletian's palace recycled, is a knockout.  Take the trip into the undercroft - it is quite amazing to realise the scale of the palace, and then realise what is sitting just above you.  We thought it far better than Dubrovnik.

Brian/Don

We are in LJUBLJANA,( Slovenia) till Saturday 31st July. Would we get to Split in a day from there?

What are the roads like?

Will it be the same as "Black Weekend" in France.

Hope you don't mind me firing the questions at ypi.

Thanks

Chris

Distance, from Autoroute, is about 300 miles.  Road 106 from Ljubljana (presumably Ljubljana Resort? :-)) to Delnice via Kocevje, about 65 miles, then A1 motorway from there to E71 Sinj - Split exit, about 220 miles, take direction Split, and when you get to the E65 (Magistrala) coast road, just inland from Split, turn South to Stobrec.  About 11 miles from the motorway exit.  Autoroute says about 6.5 hours driving time at motorhome speeds.  So possible in a day, but I'd split it (no puns please!) into two, miss the motorway and head to Rijeka from Ljubljana and then go down the Magistrala all the way.  Same distance, but about 10 hours driving.  Then, you could have a peep a Zadar on the way down.

Proviso on both routes is to make sure whether the Bora is blowing, because it will slow you down on either road (in fact, if you have a tall van, it may stop you!), and may close the motorway bridge at Jesinece, where it gets funnelled through the gap, leaving a big traffic queue and an interesting crossing on the low level bridge on the D8!  Yep, been there and done that!  :-D

However, the point is that the motorway takes an inland route, while the Magistrala skirts the coast all the way down, with some spectacular views and countryside, and loads of Autocamps, as you go.

Hi Brian

Would the 106 from Ljubjiana be ok for our lowline Chausson (7metres)? Think we will go quick route down and slower /coast road at Zagreb on way back. Don't like driving too far but the next day is my husbands birthday so he wants to be settled that day.

Can't see why it shouldn't be, it rates as a main road.  Assuming you are at the Ljubljana Resort campsite, try asking in reception if they know the road, and what they think.  When we were there at least two of the staff spoke excellent English.

Thanks Brian. We will be staying at Lake Bled which is obviously further north. Will keep researching and then will book once coinciding with flights.

Don
