Auchwitz Birkenau Poland

We were there last August. They have dedicated motorhome parking opposite Auchwitz. You can even stay the night with hook up if required. We arrived late am. You have to go around the camp with a tour guide in English and they take you by bus to Birkenau. Once there you are free to stay as long as you want before catching the bus back. Well worth the visit. We had lunch in the van, then went back into Auchwitz later and were able to go round again without a guide. By this time coach trips etc were leaving so it was left crowded and we were able to go in the huts we'd not seen on tour.

If you interested we also stayed 1 night en route in Wroclaw at Olimpijski Camp - very basic dated facilities, but secure. Limited English, but we got by. trams from the entrance into the town was well worth the visit. We were impressed by the town square and loved looking for the 'gnomes'.

We then went to Krackow and stayed at Camping Clepardia for 3 nights. Lovely site, very secure, guards on all exits. All very friendly. English spoken. Washing machines, wifi, showers etc all free. Supermarket and bus stops within walking distance. We didn't pre book anything for 3 weeks away.

Poland was worth the visit.

Hi Paul

We were there last summer, and camped at the "Centre for Prayer and Dialogue," a sort of retreat & study house with campsite in the grounds. Very pleasant location and good facilities, and good value at 96 Zloty per night. The only slightly unsettling thing was hearing long freight trains in the distance during the night - wouldn't have been a problem anywhere else, but HERE ...!

At the "Auschwitz II - Birkenau" camp (the out-of-town one, with the iconic railway siding) you can simply park outside and wander round in your own time.

At the "Auschwitz I" camp (the proper "museum" one) there's a guided tour in a choice of languages, which you HAVE to use (and pay for) if you arrive before 3pm. However, after 3pm you can wander around by yourself, and there's plenty of info in the various buildings.

If you've time while you're in the area, visit the Wieliczka Salt mine - you can stay overnight in the car park opposite (NOT the "official" one) for a nominal charge.

Hi anyone know what parking for motorhomes is like at the above museum.

We were there in 2005 with Polish friends who live near Lodz and can agree with all the above posts, we found it very sad and thought provoking and I remember seeing on the inside wall of one of the buildings Quote, "Remember your history or it will all happen again". We visited both camps 1 and 2. The original Polish name for Auschwitz is Osweicim. Have a good trip. B-)
