boxer exhaust.

driving to exeter in my 98 td boxer kon tiki i was just pulling off the A38 at exeter racecourse when disaster, my exhaust fell off and dragged beneath.

limped to site and on further insp. a couple of rubbers had snapped and the pipe had snapped off from the downstream side of the first silencer. took the hanging piece off and drove to my slot. not that noisy so decided to strap up the remaining silencer and make a run for home a couple of days later. now as many will know the boxer 2.5td is a good engine but you do spend a bit of time and effort between 4th and 5th. now running home on one silencer i swear that she was pulling with less effort and loud pedal pressure, she even went from exeter to bristol with hardly any drop to 4th. now am i halusinating or could i be correct. does the lack of the second silencer and that meandering pipework mean less backpressure on the engine and allow it to rev. more freely. (^) if so are there any neg. implications

The only answer here is noise. If you fit a pipe of correct size to your only silencer (cat ??) and direct it to exit at side of Motorhome what will the noice be outside and inside the van. There is a max allowed outside per MOT standards and what you can stand inside is a main issue.

I can only take it there was an obstruction in the silencer that fell off hence the extra torque without it.

Interesting situation here. Hope you try the plain pipe option and tell us the results.

Should sound a bit sporty like but who knows.

Somehow I think you'll just fit a new silencer and forget about it.

Gordy..

i honestly did not notice any extra noise inside the vehicle and it is not a lot noisier outside. now when i had my twin turbo supra she had 2 cats one on each exhaust and the most common easy tune on this was to drop one cat off and purchase a spool piece to go in its place this apparently upped the bhp by 30. when the mot came around you would slip the other cat back. i am wondering if by loosing the system that came off to some extent i am doing the same thing. mind you i had 340 bhp to play with with the supra.

About 2 yrs ago my exhaust broke on 1992 Hymer camp 64 and due to availibilty and cost of a new one I looked at stainless steel. I took it to a local small firm who specialise in rally/performance cars who totally redesigned the system making the van quieter and giving it a bit more power which does not seem to have hurt the fuel economy. It took 2 days to complete the job but I now have an exhaust system that should last for years and was cheaper than the original system.
