France in the rain

Anyone in France at the moment, we have been here for about 2.5 weeks and have not put two sunny days together. Currently in the Pyrenees and it is like Scotland in November, am giving it a couple more days then of to Provence. Hopefully things will improve tonight with England winning.

We've been here in France for about 9 weeks starting in Normandy and working down through Brittany to the Midi Pyrenees to Gap and now Vichy. I think we may have been lucky having seen no more than about 10 days of rain throughout the whole trip. We certainly enjoyed temperatures around 35c in places like St Emilion, Mirepoix, Nyons etc. Yes, the last 4 or 5 days have been quite wet and the temperature has dropped to 20c but, on the whole an enjoyable and warm holiday. 4 more weeks to go and we're gradually making our way North-West hopefully missing the band of rain that seems to be hanging around the central area.

We are currently at Lucerne in Switzerland having travelled down via Charleville Mezieres and Pont a Mousson. Had one or two very wet days on the way down last week but it has rained (heavily) non stop since Tuesday.

The plan was to visit INterlaken for a week or so from tomorrow (Sunday) then make our way steadily back across France but I am struggling to find any alternative places to go out of the rain!!

Seems like 2009 all over again.

We have just returned from a 4 day visit to our son (by air) in Florence and had the most tremendous thunder/lightning storms each day. Chucked it down. We even had a hail storm which according to the locals is unheard of. So there you are all you doubters of climate change, wake up it is bl**dy obvious>:-)

Sorry Porky but I thought it was supposed to be getting warmer, freezing in the Pyrenees with snow forecast tonight.

You wanna get yourself over to Portugal Rupert. I'm just over the border in Caminha and the weather has been warm and sunny all the time. It's very windy though, but no complaints.

On another matter, coming over on the ferry across the bay of biscay, I saw a fin whale 'breach' about 6 times. This is where the whale propels itself out of the water and crashes down with a mighty splosh. It was a fin whale, apparently the second largest on the planet.

Incredibly, some people sun bathing couldn't be bothered to get up and witness this amazing sight !! Words fail.....

The Trummelbach Falls further up the valley from Lauterbrunnen are magnificent and it will make no difference if it is raining as you get soaked there even on a hot summer's day!

You could also do the "3" passes and go over the border to Italy. It is often quite different weather there. We had the same misfortune with the weather and once over the Alps it was scorching hot and sunny.

Also if it is raining in the valleys then it will be snowing higher up the mountains and at the summit of the Jungfrau the dog sleighs will be running.

You should find lots to do in that beautiful area.

Here on the Costa Blanca Spain:

Up to 27 degrees this afternoon and mostly sunny with the odd cloud; although down to only 15 tonight (bloody chilly for us - might have to get Kathy to put a light blanket on top of the bedsheet tonight, or instruct her to cuddle closer...ooooer!)

I was on a ferry between Corsica and Sardinia once and all of a sudden the bar emptied ...we followed on to the balcony, and observed a very large whale, the consensus seemed to be that it had probably got lost and ended up in the Med it was very sad but an incredible sight.

Thanks for all the weather reports and had thought of going over to try Spanish side for a few days. However things are looking up at last with sun and showers today then three clear days. We want to do a couple of walks in the area and would rather wait it out in the mountains as even with sun sitting on beaches does not appeal. We want to exit over the Col du Tourmalet, it is closed again at the moment but they should re-open by the time we leave Gavernie.

Just arrived in Interlaken today and seem to have left the worst of the rain about halfway across. It is still a bit overcast but the site owner at Lazy Rancho says it is going to be fine from tomorrow and the sunn should get out from Tuesday - this seems to back up the information I have seen on the internet for this week.

I haven't seen much of the news recently but he also said that there have been dreadful floods around the Monaco area with campsites devastated (similar to Boscastle) with the flood waters.

Always someone worse off.......

We've been home a week now, spent a few days on the aire at Leucate Plage, just two minutes to the beach, left to go to Carcassone and meandered around the foothills of the pyrenees till the weather got better, three more days at Leucate, forecast poor so moved on. Our next planned destination was the Ardeche, pouring with rain, people dying so we scrubbed that.

Chris had a migraine then a very painful tooth. That resolved but meantime we went north so that if he needed treatment we could do a quick dash to blighty.

We ended up in Dorset - Isle of Purbeck - where we had super weather (last weekend) and finally got out our Sevylor Colorado Canoe, newly bought for the holiday and had a great time in Studland bay. Went home then then took the van to Exmouth, all the family joined us and used the canoe. The last few days of our holiday made up for disappointing French weather.

Have just returned from 17 nights in Brittany and Normandy (2hrs ago). I must say that on one day the temp dropped to about 20 degrees and we saw a couple of clouds, very disappointing. On the whole 25 to 33 degrees was the norm - rain? In France?

Go well.

Hi, We have just got back from 6 week tour france, belgium Luxumbourg borders then across germany to the Romantic road, down to Fussen, crossing Fern Pass to Innsbruck for 3 nights. Only 1 night rain at Creglingen.

Weather reports from fellow travellers suggested that going east was not wise, floods etc, so from Innsbruck, we turned west across Switzerland to Annecy for a night Then headed to med coast at Agde , (3 night en route)

Balance of time at Agde, 16 nights, then a week northbound to catch yesterday's ferry homeward.

5 days High wind at Agde, then Hot sunshine ,temperatures rising to 39 degrees in the van. Return journey as far as Chartres very hot and sunny six litres of water drunk to stave off dehydration en route (yes it was water!) the temp dropped to 24 for final leg up to calais.. Dover to home in sunshine again temp still 24 at home today.

There was a threat of thunder rumbling around one day at Agde, but didnt get the rain.

Saw reports of floods in Cannes area, but we missed all the rain wherever it went.

Rain, What rain ???

Well, we've had to make do with being in the UK for now, however, it was a lovely weekend at Withernsea/Hornsea/Skirlington. We went upon Friday night and had a gorgeous fish and chip tea (from The Golden Haddock in Withernsea - if you're ever there do go as they are the best for many miles around!). This was followed by a nice potter and relax on the beach in the lovely warm sun, the sea was like a mill pond. B-)

Saturday we took the dogs on the beach (seeing as we were parked right next to it!) then had a nice potter round the market then the main street before taking our new inflatable Gumotex Helios 1 and Gumotex Solar 300 canoes out for a test paddle on the lovely calm sea. Had great fun and teased the life-guard who was drooling over them! Dogs then had a swim and Lily had a go in the Solar ... not toooooo happy! 8-)

Unfortunately we had to come back home Saturday mid-afternoon though as someone wanted to have a serious look at our Yamaha scooter, never mind, he bought it though so that was a good outcome! :->

We then went off again at teatime to Hornsea and parked in our usual spot in the car park behind the boat store (much nicer than it sounds!). Dogs had a good romp on the beach, spag bol for us for tea, then a bit of reading etc before bed, all in all a good day.

Sunday, woke to find a small carboot sale had set up on the grass near the car park - had a shuftie, then off to the massive carboot at Skirlington - wear comfy footwear if you ever go!!! Bought a few bits and pieces before a nice home cooked bacon butty for lunch (yummie!), before going back to Hornsea and parking at the Floral Hall on the northern side (big car park, nice view of the sea). Dogs had a lovely potter on the beach and a few swims - Romy's swim was a bit more than she was hoping for when her favourite ball started to float away on the waves ... up and down, up and down she went over them, one by one - she got her ball though, clever girl - no way was she going to lose it!!! *-)

Although it was warm, unfortunately it was quite windy and lots of strong gusts so canoeing wasn't on the cards, but off came the sandles and we had a nice paddle in the surf instead. A good weekend. :-D

Now at least we've tried out the new canoes, we have finally been able to decide which ones we want to keep (don't ask how many we've got!!!), so all we need to do is sell off the canoes we don't want anymore and clear them out of the garage. We'll be taking our new canoes with us next week on holiday to Wales and hopefully this time we'll be able to get out in them! Then off to the Northern show for a few days in our hopefully sunny summer weather. :->

Hi,

What is all this nonsense about rain in France!!! Sat in lovely garden outside Town hall in Sourdeval (Depty50) under clear blue sky and hot sunshine making use of free wi-fi connection. Just about to return to van for aperitif overelooking nice parkland, whilst enjoying free services, invc. electric, and free overnight parking on the aire. France takes some beating!
