mattress topper

We have a memory foam mattress topper at home and just some plain foam in the van. It cost a couple of quid and does the trick :-D . I can't really tell the difference but i do know that a layer of foam gives a better nights sleep in the van. Try the cheap stuff first and see how you get on if you feel you need to "upgrade" you haven't lost much cash.

Hi Kay

We use memory foam mattresses at home & in the motorhome.

It's certainly a case of quality costs.

We have a Tempur 3" memory foam topper in the house (expensive) and a cheaper make in the motorhome. (Van Comfort) www.vancomfort.co.uk

Both are comfortable, but the Tempur more so.

The main problem people find is that they are hot to sleep on, especially if the night is humid.

We have recently purchased an alternative cover "Coolmax" from

http://www.memoryfoamwarehouse.co.uk/categories/Other-Products/Mattress-Spare-Covers/

We can certainly vouch for this cover, making it much cooler to sleep on.

I'd agree with Hopesy. Try a conventional foam rubber one first & see how it goes. Can I suggest contacting your local furniture manufacturer/repairer, versus going for something specialist built for a motorhome? My experience is that anything bespoke for motorhome knocks the price up by a factor of 2 or 3 (witness cost of replacing motorhome carpets at a specialist versus getting an offcut from local carpet shop).

In our case, our local "foam dealer" did have memory foam, but when we explained that we'd be rolling it up every day to bung up in the overcab, recommended against as it isn't really designed for that flexibility. Instead he suggested use of cheaper foam rubber as it'd be more durable (he offered memory if we were insistent, just didn't recommend it). We went with that, and 2.5 yrs on it's still going strong & v.comfortable.

I've been very, very impressed by a Rekelf memory foam topper. Don't seem to have the 'too hot' problem (not so far anyway) and it's supremely comfortable. They do three qualities and two thicknesses, and although I went to the NEC prepared to buy the top (Gold) model, I found the next one down (Silver) suited me better.

So, if you get the chance to go to one of the shows it could make sense to try out different versions to see which is best for you. Not cheap, but then a good night's sleep is priceless isn't it?

Thanks for all the replies. Its really useful getting so many different opinions. As we are new to motorhoming we have found it really helpful. What would we do without the forum help and advice. Thanks again.

We tried a memory foam mattress but found it too hot to sleep on in the summer and difficult to handle when trying to get to the underbed locker from inside! :-S We changed to a feather topper and it was great... :-) We have now changed motorhomes to one with single beds and opted for the feather toppers again (double thickness when beds used seperately and single when infill used to make huge double.) Highly recommended.

Hi Kay,

We use memory foam toppers from Dunelm Mill both at home and in the M/H. They have grooves through the top surface which allow air to circulate and we have never had a problem with them being too hot.

I couldn't find them on the web but they do still have them in store.

Again, they're not cheap but what price a good nights sleep.

Keith.

  • 2 weeks later...

I brought a cheap memory one on ebay about 40 quid as 'er indoors complained about the Motorhome mattress being too firm. Works fine apart from gradualy working it's way of the bed due to us scrambling in & out have to re-position it after 2/3 weeks use.

Not had a problem with it being hot but we do have a quilted matterss protector on top of it.

If you get two single toppers instead of a double they still work ok side by side but they are a lot easier to store than one large one . We can get two singles rolled up under the buks in our Morello, no problem with space to spare. Better than having to prop it up in the wash room during the day like we had to with our old double topper.

Same problem here - this is what I put about it, and my solution, on the Chausson Flash 04 thread, it also means that the topper is a bit cooler than when used with it's original cover:

The only issue we've really had has nothing to do with the van, but rather with the mattress topper which like to try to sneak off the bed when we're not looking! This is basically because there's nothing to stop it. To solve this I've made a bespoke 'tuck-in-able' cover for it out of an old double duvet cover - the topper (which has been cut to shape to match the mattress) goes in the centre of the cover and is pushed right down to the bottom (the duvet cover is upside down with the opening at the top), with equal widths of the cover having been left at either side. These have been stitched from top to bottom to form a shaped tight fit cover up against the sides of the topper. This stops the topper moving around in the duvet cover and the side and the top are then tucked in to stop it 'escaping' off the bed all the time, as you would tuck in a normal sheet. I then put a sheet on top (I use fitted terry sheets as they are less hassle than wrestling with a standard sheet). I'm going to make a slight change to the design by putting 'corners' in the topper duvet cover, like standard fitted sheets, to make it a bit easier, but otherwise it's working well. Thinking of calling it a topper stopper!!!!

Duvet and Pillow warehouse - get one quick. I have spent goodness knows how much time on the net looking for a topper for the bed in the camper, bought earlier in the year. I ended up with a 5cm double at a bargain price of £56 down from £100 and was not disappointed. It is on the bed at home at the moment and is great. Other similar ones came in at a much greater price. Postage was next to nothing as well. I don't often recommend but I will this one. I also bought two pillows down from £16 to eight a piece and they are also good. I suffer from a bad back and was not prepared to go away again without something decent to sleep on. I think they still have a sale on at the moment.
