Renault Master (Devon Coversion) Glow Plugs

Hello,

Stop looking.

It does not have any.

There is an injector on the inlet manifold that only operates AFTER starting in very cold weather. This engine is a Fiat unit and their 2.5 and 2.8 turbo units do not have glow plugs. Also used in Iveco Daily.

Thank you for your reply. Now I am now stymied and confused as the dash does have a pre-heat indicator light. Could my engine be an older verion of the ones you mentioned?

The ‘van has become reluctant to start, often but not always needing a few attempts before the engine fires. There are no other symptoms. Once started it runs well. It is serviced annually the last time being April this year.

I would be grateful for any further advice.

John,

Hard to say for sure but the most likely cause would be a fuel leak from either the top of the fuel pump, or the fuel filter housing. Failing that it could be a dodgy injector, but these engines are not known for that.

In order to start, you need a strong battery and starter, fuel supply at the right time and compression.

If it runs fine (albeit eventually) and does not smoke when in use, you probably don't have a compression problem.

Try swithching on the ignition but not starting the engine for 10 seconds, turn off and repeat three times before attempting to start. If this improves the chances of starting first time you have a fuel supply issue as above. You should have a fuel lift pump that will be trying to prime the system and purge any air. This procedure will give it a bit of help.

In any case, you should think about taking the van to a diesel injection specialist.

The Renault part of these vans is prone to immobiliser and key code problems which often can only be fixed by a Renault dealer.

Good luck.

As this is a year 2000 Master it is one of the fairly early 'new generation' masters and will probably have an S9U direct injection turbo diesel engine. I have an S8U non turbo, ( indirect injection ) which has glowplugs for each cylinder but as mentioned previously, the S9U didn't: however as I understand it, the S9U does have one 'common' heater plug, maybe in the manifold. I'll have a look in my documentation if I have any for your year Master.

Documentation found ............ my documentation is dated 1997, the first year of the 'new' Master so probably fits yours but may not. The 2.8 turbo is an S9W. ( not S9U ) It does have a pre-heat system but not a 'glow plug' as such. It has what is called a 'Flamstart' or 'Flamestart'. This operates if the coolant temp is below 5 deg C. The purpose is to heat the inlet air by igniting diesel in the inlet manifold.

The pre-heat warning light stays on during pre-heating and then you have 20 seconds to start the engine or the pre-heat will become inhibited.

A fault in the system may be indicated by flashing of the warning light.

There are several components in this 'Flamestart' device including solenoid valves, temp. sensor, igniter, preheating unit etc.

I do have some troubleshooting info. which, if you think you are competent to 'have a go' I could help you with, but you may want to get it looked at professionaly.

All correct, and as I said it is a Fiat engine, and if I am correct in assuming that the temperature in your neck of the woods is well over 5C can I politely suggest that you are barking up the wrong tree.

There is nothing wrong with your pre-heater.

Start going through the rest of my list.

Very small air leaks on the suction side of the pump can cause starting problems. When idle tiny bubbles tend to accumulate at the highest point in the injectors until fresh fuel flushes them through on starting.

Check the filter is tight for a start (dont overtighten though) and then any connection in the line back to the tank.
