Insurance Quest

We take delivery of our new MH on Sept 1st, so have been phoning around the various insurance companies for quotes. Its our first and I'm somewhat taken aback by the range of quotes for basically the same cover were talking from just over £200 with a well known company who specialise in the over 50's to almost £600 with another and some coming in between.

Anyone have any suggestions, recommendations or warnings.

Thanks in advance

Stewart

We have been insured with Caravan Club for the last 6 years and they don't seem to increase the premiums like some. I think I'm paying £210 this year for my coach-built.

Can't comment on their service as I haven't needed to claim :D yet! 8-)

What's the new reg plate in September, is it 50?

Hi,

We always ring around at least 5/6 companies at every renewal and we couldn't find anyone even close to SAGA's price and level of cover last year, and we use the MH in Europe all the time,

We didn't opt for there breakdown cover as we have several vehicles so wanted to go with ADAC but even SAGA's bolt-on breakdown cover was very reasonable.

I have heard that they may be high at renewal time and there was a suggestion that its worth checking when you receive their/your renewal that you compare the price using there online quote, but that is only hearsay won't know until December, when we will restart our annual ring around again.

Hope that helps.

Saga has given us the best quote at £214.90 (5000 miles per year) followed by the Caravan Club at £260.97 again for 5000 miles.

Both cover for European cover which we don't really need till I retire. For both storage is a Gold CASSOA site or short spells on our drive.

The large range of quotes is often to do with the no claims bit. Most people have their no claim on a car so you start with none on the van. The specialist companies know this and will mirror the no claim. We always seem to change every year, this year although they were not quite the cheapest but had the best cover was the NFU.

As with previous posters, low to mid £200's, with any Insurer taking your NCB into account for UK cover. Increases depending on European cover requirements (No. days away)

We are with Caravan Guard, again can't comment on service as we have not had any claim.

Most of the Motorhome specialist insurers give discounts for Club membership (CC or C&CC)

Also Caravan Guard give discount for Thatcham Alarm & Parking Security features.

Oh & a discount for MMM Members.

We are with Caravan Guard, and yes we have had to claim, (a big one) They were very prompt in arranging help on a Saturday afternoon, and got us and van ( not driveable) back to Portsmouth from Scotland , and arranged for van to be picked up and taken to the repairers. So can say that the service was EXELLENT

SAGA have always been the cheapest and best cover for us. If you put your wife/partner on the quote it should make it even cheaper our is.

You may need to be careful doing this if you plan to add a partner just to get an extra discount.

I was told by my own insurance provider that it would be the expectation of the insurance company that every driver named in the policy could and would drive the vehicle. So, if 'hubby' normally does all the driving (as often seems to be the case with motorcaravanning couples) and, say, has a disabling accident while abroad, and 'wifey' is named on the policy, then the insurance company will expect wifey to drive the vehicle back home to the UK.

If you decide to go with Comfort (as I did last year) be aware that they exclude cover whilst in a garage. There is a long thread on another forum about this, from a lady who had her MH stolen from a Fiat dealer & discovered she had no cover from Comfort. :-(

For my part, if this exclusion is still there come renewal time in November I shall be looking elsewhere.

We are insured for Full-Timing by Comfort (AVIVA). I will now have to read my policy again.

Thanks emmbeedee for pointing that out. It is on page 42 of the booklet that Comfort publish for the policy.

I had a car stolen while undergoing repairs at a local garage and my then cover with the CIS, covered the vehicle when under the control or custody of a motor trader, so it never occured to me that this was an exclusion on this policy.

Our motorhome brokedown earlier this year in the lake district and was in a garage yard for a week awaiting parts. I never thought to check about insurance.

The other forum has a form now to be signed by the garage, specifying that your vehicle will be covered by their insurance. You still do however need to check how much cover they have in any claim, as some small motor trade policies are for as little as £10,000. That is not much good for a Motorhome costing many times that figure.

In my case it's on page 35 of the booklet, other people have quoted different page numbers as well. There are evidently several versions of this booklet, but they all seem to have the same exclusion.

Safeguard mirror the NCB you have on another vehicle. (if that applies) They were the cheapest I could find bearing in mind the motor home was a second vehicle which is not normally considered for no claims bonus. I have not yet had to test them for a claim. Will look around next Feb when renewal is necessary.

Up untill this year we were also with Saga and have been for yonks, we have house, contents and our car. But this year with exactly the same conditions as years gone by the premium has shot up, contacted CCC and they beat Saga by £180 plus.

When I contacted Saga and mentioned I had had a far better qoute the reply was "that's the best we can do", so so long to Saga we shall see what happens next year.

Hi ATB,

Try Adrian Flux brokers, they advertise in MMM so a plug won't go amiss.

They offered us a very competitive quote without putting unrealistic demands of alarms, immobilisers and trackers that a lot of the big companies seem to require. You can end up spending more on devices that you actually save by having them fitted! Common sense in where you park is by far the best security in my book.

Keith.

We're with Safeguard and have been for years now. Main benefit is unlimited European travel and it also covers breakdown service, including Europe.

Upshot? If you intend to travel abroad it makes sense-if you intend to stay in UK then there are cheaper quotes but then you have to add about £100 for breakdown service etc.

Mine costs £325 this year for a low profile including all the above so I think it's best value overall.

As a note-wheel change in Europe from call to arrival 30 mins-15 minutes to change it and no charge. Overall 1hr and I'm back on the road-worth the premium for service and peace of mind. Would you want to change a wheel yourself on a coachbuilt on a French Motorway that has been put on with an airgun?

Interesting conversation with Caravan Guard their quote though competitive is only valid if a Cat 1 Thatchem alarm system is fitted as value of MH is over £40k.

Dealer is quoting £655.00 to fit a Cobra cat 1 system. This seems a rather expensive or is this the norm!, anyone any recommendations.

Cobra alarms are more suitable for cars and there are much better options available for motorhomes.

Have a chat with either of the attached, they have much better product and can advise you of the best options -
