IF you want to camp on board which is much easier then you must leave Italy before the end of October. Superfast ferries are very good but they do tend to put the motorhomes right at the back on the open deck which gives a lot of vibration. From Ancona to Patras there is also Anek and Minoan. Minoan is probably the poshest and Anek the friendliest. What we do is go and see who is doing the best deals on the day you want to leave Ancona.

The cost rises significantly after 6 metres so unless you have a very big van just say it is 6 metres as nobody checks and the Greeks always knock a metre of anyway!

Happy travelling

Hi Petra,

Not necessarily, the smaller ferry companies ( Agoudimos Lines, Ventouris Ferries & Endeavor Lines) on the short sea crossings Bari/Brindisi to Igoumenitsa/Patras will allow you to sleep in your van on the overnight crossings all year round.

We have been doing this for a good many years now. Don't contact the ferry companies just turn up book a deck passage and away you go.

safe travelling.

Hi Don

We only restricted our answer to Ancona - Patras as that was the line they asked about. It is a lot further to drive down to Bari or Brindisi.

One thing people might not know is that you can book Ancona - Patras and then return from Igoumenitsa - Ancona, handy if you are only wanting to go to the Greek mainland. Also if you dont know when you are going to return it is worth getting an open return which is valid for one year as it is cheaper than paying for two one way journeys.
