Guest Tracker
Does anyone know please whether there are any decent free to view/air stations on either Sky or Freesat that are not available on Freeview? I've tried a websearch but have not been able to find an intelligible comparison between the three alternative crud providers! By decent I mean either comedy, film, factual, wild life etc. By crud I mean noisy, light flashing, inane, childish, pop 'music', shouting and screaming audience, self important presenters etc! Or is it just me getting older? Thanks
Randonneur
Try this website, I think all the channels are on there. http://www.onastra.com/2183/channelfinder/tv/search?country_filter=available_in&country=38&language%5B%5D=3&free=yes&pay=yes By the way, your last statement is correct!!!!!! we all are. Guest Tracker
Thanks - and not wishing to be ungrateful but - it only shows what is on Astra - not what is specifically on Sky or Freesat or Freeview and what I hope to find is a complete list of channels intended for the UK with a simple yes or no regarding availability on each of the three main free to receive alternatives? Randonneur
I would have thought that all of the free ones you could pick up as long as you point your dish at the right satellite. Here you are, the Hotbird channels: http://www.aurora.se/hotbird_satellite_channels.htm and another http://www.lyngsat.com/hotbird.html

Guest Tracker
Thanks fellas - can you also get those extra channels that are on free to view Sky on Freesat does anyone know please? So far it looks as if a secondhand Sky hd digibox with no subscription to pay is the best option seeing as how I have an aversion to lining Murdoch's ever grasping hands and already well enough lined pocket. I don't think that you will get a SH HD Sky box without paying a subscription, it used to be an extra £10. Mine is a Sky+ ordinary box with a blue card in, if I wanted to have more channels I would have to apply for the £23 one off card but I don't think that I could have the recording facility included in that price. I may be wrong, if I am I will definately apply for the card.
RogP
Hi tracker does this link help in anyway http://www.ukfree.tv/allchannels.php I've also gone with the FreeSatFromSky card for £20 as well as freeview. I found that you get a good variation with Freeview and FreeSat with some chanels on one and not the other (ironically got more Freeview choice the other week down in Cornwall that I did from the SatDish. The only thing to remember with the Sky card is it has to be registered to a specific digibox to get activated and cant be swapped unless you then ring Sky to change and register it to a different box. colin
Is it for home or van? I have indulged myself with a Panasonic HD tv which includes Freesat HD and Freeview HD (yet to arive in our region), it also can pick up most foriegn HD using a fta box to control Disq switching, although at moment that is only german fta. Is it worth it? juries still out on that one as SD pictures are not as good as old CRT tv, but as the old set needed repairing seemed a good time to buy new tv. thebishbus
Hi. Colin, interesting that you mention good quality CRT pictures. Samsung produced an HD ,CRT, TV, with much better pictures than the new slim display types, not many people bought them though, they wanted slim TV's. There is a new slim system in the pipeline that combines CRT type phosphor displays with laser instead of electron scanning, this gives a far better picture and is more efficient to run.Interesting to see if it gets of the ground or is absorbed by the big boys. colin
I supose sometime a better type of display will come out. I do like the HD programmes(altough many ITV are not true HD), programmes like coast can be stuning in HD, and gf is well impressed with gardeners world, but as I say a good quality crt is better IMO at displaying SD. One of the bennifits of LED/LCD is that I now have a 37" tv which doesn't dominate the room any more than the previous 28" crt did, as it tucks back closer to wall

If its any help I was facing a similar mind numbing decision earlier this year when I bought a new telly and decided to push the boat out and get some extra channels......but NOT subscription ones. I'm not in a cable area so that meant whatever I had it had to be satellite and in the end went for Freesat. Bought a twin lnb receiver which enables you to record two different progs at the same time or watch one whilst recording the other. Cost £230 plus £65 for the dish and fitting. There's a lot of crap on with just a smattering of good worthwhile progs to watch and to be perfectly honest I wonder if it was really worth spending out on. Mel B
Can you get some of the American series on them that aren't available here? I like cop shows such as NCIS, CSI: NY, Without a Trace, etc, etc, but they eventually come onto UK tv anyway, but I also like one called 'The Closer', but once I leave work I won't be able to get it anymore so want to see if there's another way I can get it. Any ideas?
