Keithl
Hi Michele, The wife went 18 months ago and says you must see the Vatican and do the ghost tour which is a 2 hour walk in the evening. You can pre-book both before you go to save time there. Where are you staying? She stayed out of town and spent a fortune on buses and taxis getting in and out every day, you need to stay in the main town. Also don't buy bus passes from touts in the bus station, they're not worth it. And most importantly watch out for pick pockets. Rome is rife with them, even in the Vatican!!! I'm sure she'll think of more so I'll add a post when she does, or if you've got more questions then ask. Keith.
pkc
Hi Michele, Too many sights to list, get a good guide book before you go. Good shoes essential, but the hop on/off archeobus goes from the Piazza Venezia in the centre, takes you around most of the main sites for about £10, packed lunches a good idea. Don’t try and do it all at once, believe me you will want to go back. If you have the time go to Herculaneum, the city buried by the Vesuvius eruption, this is much better preserved than Pompeii. Simply amazing.

Brian Kirby
pkc - 2010-09-09 9:50 AM Hi Michele, Too many sights to list, get a good guide book before you go. ............. If you have the time go to Herculaneum, the city buried by the Vesuvius eruption, this is much better preserved than Pompeii. Simply amazing. Maybe, Lord Copper, but don't forget Herculaneum and Pompeii are the other side of Naples from Rome, so not exactly handy to visit!St Peters and the Vatican, including Michelangelo's Sistine chapel ceiling first. Stunning in both scale and quality. Trevi fountain is fun, but squashed into a corner. Spanish steps greatly over-rated IMO. Pantheon interesting. Forum rather shabby, but you have to, don't you? :-) Colosseum I guess, but not sure I'd bother going in, there are better examples elsewhere, but the outside is quite impressive. I think the best solution is the guide book, and then pick out what appeals to you. There is just so much. Just wander and look, and stick your noses into any of the churches as you pass, there's some really amazing stuff to discover. Meals needn't break the bank either: Roman office workers have to eat out after all, and they aren't all millionaires!
michele
looked at Hotels and they are silly money so we opted for a little self contained B& B and we have our own come & go door so really pleased , It looks nice & clean with own en suite and fridge and the ratings and comments that people have left are very positive about the hostess so really looking forward to it . I wont even begin to try and spell the places you have said Brian but I am having some of that :D Cheers everyone ;-)
