Guest Tracker
Having watched the last night of the proms again this year - as I have for nigh on half a century - I never fail to be moved by what I see as the genuine peacetime patriotism of live audiences all over the UK. Patriotism is not about slagging off other countries and faiths. Patriotism is not about burning books and flags. Patriotism is not about the exclusion of other nations. Patriotism in it's best form welcomes peoples from all other nations to our great country and the numbers of flags from many and diverse other countries seen both at the main event and in the parks around the UK was a wonderful sight to behold. It was fitting that the programme was transmitted worldwide and I just hope that the spirit of patriotic friendship that was so apparant is not lost in translation by overseas translators and commentators. Although whether the spirit of the event and the Great British eccentricity that is the last night of the proms will be understood in countries on the other side of the world is unfortunately somewhat doubtful? Tony Jones
Great show - but did you notice that when it got to the traditional stuff towards the end, they stopped cutting to Scotland and Wales? From then on it was shots from the hall, Hyde Park, or NI only. Did the Scots and Welsh not join in those songs? Can anyone who watched in those lovely lands tell us? I know "Jerusalem" emphasises England, but "Britannia" and "Land of H&G" are pretty inclusive. And if the people in the hall waving other nations' flags could join in, surely the WHOLE of the UK could?
