Tyres

Hi All,

I'm new to this so please bear with me.

It has come to the time when i need to replace two tyres they are down to 3m on the front after 38000 miles The back two are still 7mm all have worn even The spare has not been used. All the tyres are Michelin X Camper 215x75x16 all are 4 years old. These tyres are not made anymore.

My dilemma is do I replace one tyre with the Michelin equivalent which is the Agilis camper tyre for about £150 then put this on with the spare, or buy two van tyres like Avon same load rating 2 for £187 fully fitted and balanced or similar Federal tyres. My tyre retailer wasn't able to tell me what the difference was between a camper tyre, and a van tyre with the same load rating, and speed rating.

Has anyone had a similar experience, can anyone offer any advice or suggestions.

Regards Mel :-D

I am new to this forum as well, freshers alike !!

I spent goodly amount of my commercial life earning my crust as a consultant to two of the leading tyre manufacturers and so I hope my observation, although not based on actual factual knowledge, is of some help to you.

A commercial tyre is designed for the hard rigours of a very hard and generally abusive life and is normally about as tough as they come. A good make such as Avon should be a cast iron investment.

Just make sure that you get a matching set of load speed ratings and you should be 100% OK.

Thanks for that, BIG JIMMY, as I have just put a full set of Avons on my'van (and done 1800 trouble-free miles around the far north of Scotland on them) on the advice of my friendly local tyre specialists, I feel vindicated!

Melvyn, welcome to the Forum -- if you had looked lower down on these threads you would have seen the thread that I have just 'bumped' up to meet this one -- it is full of remarks concerning Tyres -- including useful technical advice from our resident expert -- Nick (Euroserve).

Hope that helps,

Colin.

Got a Michelin Xc camping tyre recently ( 3 months ago) thro" My Tyres " on internet. Cost about £120 fitted at local vauxhall dealer.

They send tyre to the dealer direct and they have a list of firms who will fit in your locality. Another company is Black Circle - a bit cheaper - but no nearby fitter in my town.

After much deliberation, recently replaced my Michelin XC Camping, which were 6 years old, with Continental Vanco 2 commercial tyres. Cheaper than Micheli Agilis, and quieter than the old tyres.

My local tyre specialist assured me that the tread pattern wraps round the tyre edge a little more on Camping tyres, to provide a better grip on wet grass, otherwise the speed and load ratings are the same. At £40 per tyre I can suffer a little less grip on wet grass.

The new tyres have done about 2000 miles and are fine.
