house security

We have enjoyed four great years motorcaravaning from the advice supplied on this forum.

Unfortunately our latest holiday had to be cut short due to our house

receiving a visit from the Breaking and Entering brigade.

The Police response was extremely good but unfortunately the perpetrators escaped.

Also the Caravan Club and Minehead wardens were very helpful with their services.

Since we returned home the B&E brigade made a second attempt to gain entry to the house and also to remove a car.

Could you advise what precautions you would take with regards to security in your home via the forum or a PM please.

Thanks,

Gloria

We had the same problem in 2009 whilst in the S of France nothing was taken as we left nothing to be taken. They entered via window they could`nt get through doors, we now have window locks. Gates to side of property now padlocked as are wooden gates to drive. Stop mail coming via Post Office "Keepsafe". - Police rec all above. You can only make it as difficult as possible.

We have an alarm, window locks etc, and we always hide all the keys and valuables so that hopefully the B******s won't have time to find them once they have set off the alarm >:-(

Plus the most valuable thing is always with me when we are away the camper..................Oop's I mean the wife :$ (lol)

And dont leave the car keys in the house.....take them with you

And once you have taken them with you, don't leave them in the van. Our policy, and probably every other for that matter (?), does not cover for them being locked in the van. That's the van and our car keys.

I don't think any self respecting burgler would want to be seen dead in my 99 Rover Sterling (lol) (lol)

Alarms pretty much a waste of time these days. You need heavy dudy gear for long stays away. Guards that work like old style lift gates are fitted into all window reveals and locked together. Shops fit this type of screen. Then steel gates front and back and dont forget one steel gate over the exit door. Fit everything with prisoneers screws which go in but cannot be removed.

My first re-action was what area of the country is this? We had an attempted break in some years ago not long after we moved in to the new house. We have since had double glazing fitted with locks on all the windows and on the new re-inforced patio doors. There are no large opening windows downstairs only small top windows in the bay. All upstairs windows are fitted with locks and all keys are put away. We have outside security lights with movement sensors that are set on short delay so that they flash on and off if there is any movement in the area. One covers the garden, another covers the side of the house and one is mounted on the front of the garage. We have good neighbours who we inform if we are going away also a regular windowcleaner, milkman and postman who also watch out for anything suspicious when they are in the area at different times of the day. At least two of our neighbours have our mobile phone numbers so we can keep in touch from time to time. As a back up we also have an internal alarm system. Being a good neighbour pays dividends and we watch over our neighbours houses also if they are out and about. The area you live in obvously affects any systems which you may want to put in place but town or country shouldn't make much difference unless your house is particularly isolated. Hope some of this may help with the problem and good luck in the future. B-)
