Hi, we have a 1990 Legend Autosleeper on a Ford Transit chassis.

Has anybody changed the driver and passenger seats on this model (or something similar) for something a little firmer and with a more side support.

If so what did you change them for and were there any problems?

I know I could go to the breakers yard and see what is available but, if someone has already done the research, it will save me a lot of time, especially as there will have to be room for them to swivel. I don't fancy taking some seats out, at the breakers, only to find they don't fit when I get them home.

Fred,

I don't know if this will help or not ? I changed both front cab seats in our 1988 Talbot Talisman, I was looking, like you, for a pair of captains seats on E-Bay, just make sure that you do your measurements and know what size you are looking for.

I got lucky and saw a pair of New 2009 Fiat cab-seats for sale for £170.

The guy was having the van converted to a Camper and wanted 'Proper' captains seats, so was selling the originals. So you could ask some of the smaller converters what they do with 'their' surplus cab seats ?

But be aware that NO seat is going to 'fit straight in' without some level of 'Fettling' ! Even the Fiat seats needed me to make 8 brackets to attach them to the seat swivels. I used galvanized rafter brackets, cut them to size, a bit 'Over Engineered' but you can't take chances with Safety. Good Luck ! it'll be worth the trouble both for comfort and Resale value. ;-) Ray

Guest Tracker

A word of caution - changing fixed seats for ones not crash tested for structural integrity and passenger injury minimising as part of the vehicle's original specification can have severe insurance repercussions in the event of an accident - and maybe even some interest from Mr Plod as well as potential MOT issues?

I've done it myself years ago before all the OTT regulations etc and you might well have no issues at all and as long as you are aware of the potential for issues that's fine - good luck!

When we first got our 1989 Transit, whoever had "home-converted" it had fitted a pair of VW T25 seats which we didn't find very comfortable.

I got hold of a pair of later-model Transit ("smiley") seats but they didn't fit either the original holes or the ones drilled for the VW seats.

So I drilled my own holes for them, and re-inforced them by using big chunky metal plates as "washers." Probably illegal now, but like Tracker I hadn't heard of any rules back then to say I shouldn't.

My reasoning was that it's the seat-belt, not the seat, that stops you in a crash, and I wasn't messing with those!

Don't think I'd try it nowadays though.
