How good is your GP?

We have just got back from holiday, and whilst in Telford Sue had a mouth infection which caused her face to swell, so we made a emergency appointment at the local Suttonhill surgery :-D

Sue was amazed at the difference between them and our own surgery which seems to resent you being ill, they even had a protest outside our surgery a few weeks ago as they had introduced a system where you could not make an appointment, but had to tell your symptoms to the receptionist and then the doctor would ring you back >:-(

Needless to say they have now changed the system >:-)

Mrs o developed a badly swollen knee at the Lincoln Show last year, and we went to the First Aid station.

The St John Ambulance guy there told us about a walk-in NHS centre in Lincoln, so we booked tickets for the bus into town, found the centre, asked for an appointment, waited 10 minutes, got seen by a young GP, was given a prescription for anti-infammatory pills (it was a chipped knee-cap apparently), popped into Boots and Mrs o was popping the pills less than an hour after we got off the bus :D

A very different experience from the more 'laid-back' service we have come to expect from our own surgery down here in the sticks.

I hope no-one's going to call me ignorant 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

I have a lady GP who not only is a damn good doctor, but gorgeous too! :-D

Any excuse to go and see her will do but am currently going through a hellish time with sciatica and when I went to see her about this problem she spent some time giving my a**e a good touch up! (lol)

ooooo Bullet you have come to the right forum for Sciatica there are loads of us on here with it with all sorts of remedies for you to try. Dave Newell is one of the biggest sufferers and has gone through months of agony with his.

I get it on and off, had one really bad bout of it and found a way to control it and now only lasts a day if that.

Good luck with it hope you find a method that works for you.

Dot gets bad sciatica following the new hip joint earlier this year - in fact the sciatica gives her more gyp than the worn hip did - Soddes Law in action again - so if anyone has a proven relief plan for sciatica we would really appreciate hearing about it please. Thanks.

We're considering accupuncture - anyone tried it?

Best remedy for me would be having my Doc continue giving my a**e a good feel each time I go to see her. (lol) (lol)

Seriously though i'm really pi**ed off with the grief it's giving me. Been having physio for the past few weeks but feel no better. Normally i'd have a few weeks off work but with retiring in December i'm trying to avoid it as it looks bad form....but i'm struggling!

I know searches on here are not easy but I am sure the heading was sciatica and started by Dave.

Some work and walk through it, for me stopping right away as soon as the first twinge hits and resting for half hour helps, if I get more than 4 twinges in a day then I take my anti inflammatory before going to bed and it has usually gone by the morning.

Moving for me just makes it more and more angry, do not wear non slip slippers especially if you have wooden floors. I know it is hard to get use to but I wear bed socks when at home in the day, non slip shoes causes your hip to jar when your body turns but your feet don't. When bending always lift the affected leg off the floor if you can, especially when reaching for something at the same time, like pulling things out of a van or locker, or in the freezer or oven. All these things can trigger mine off.

The worse thing for me is walking in soft sand (this is how I started) or on uneven ground for any length of time.

Just some tips that might help someone defiantly not all as we have talked about on here.

Mandy

My GP group have a very good system.

You can phone up and get an appointment within a couple of days if you're not fussy which one you want to see.

If you need to see someone the same day, the nurse practitioner phones you back to assess whether she can deal with your problem. If it's suitably urgent she will make an appointment with her and liaise with a GP whilst you are in the surgery.

If it's really, really urgent you go to the hospital next door and see the duty doctor.

They also invite you in for all the necessary preventative check-ups and jabs.

All of this within walking distance and in a small market town...brilliant!

This is what I am trying to do but not very successfully. :'(

If only I could!!

Dressing has become a contortionists nightmare, especially when it comes to the bottom half......pants, jeans, socks and shoes. I'd go 'bottomless' if it wasn't for fear of getting sectioned! :-(

I am fussy about who I see. I'm not letting a guy feel my bum or rub my thigh. Only Sarah can see to my needs.

She wears tight pants, has a lovely little bum, and does my blood pressure the world of good. (lol)

Getting a bit worried about you now Bulletguy :-D :-D :-D

As for the sciatica - never suffered from it myself, but a relative swore that this thing he got from a Physio that enabled him to hang from a support under a door frame so that hi legs were not taking all his weight helped him a lot.

He did it once or twice a day for about a month I think - doing these exercises at the same time.

The idea is to take the pressure off the nerve that is trapped and allow everything to by put back into place.

As far as I know it worked.

He is dead now tho - that part of the house collapsed on him when he opened the door one morning 8-)

JOKE! - Last sentence is a joke 8-) (lol) - the hanging from a door frame is true and did help him.

Afraid I haven't got much good to say about our GPs. Our surgery is so large you never get to see the same doctor and in all honesty I don't even know who my actual doctor is.

Dave had to have a growth removed from his wrist a couple of years ago which was done at the GP Surgery, it is an absolute disgrace the scar that is left is just like a large zip.

When I had a slipped disc some years back and couldn't move for nearly two months I kept phoning the surgery asking for a doctor to come and see me, would they hell. No all they kept doing was prescribing me more pain killers, in the end I was taking 32 a day and never once did I see a Doctor. By the way I know it was a slipped disc because I had it happen once before but then we were living in a different part of the country and my then doctor visited me straight away.

As to sciatica I can sympathise with everyone who suffers I know exactly what its like. Over the years I have just learned to grin and bear it.

Whats more I've got no faith in our dentist either.

Sue
