Phishing

Yesterday out of the blue we had a window pop up that informed us that the Microsoft Office we were using was possibly not an authorised version and would we click on it to verify.

We knew this to be untrue and so were suspicious. But when the administrator tried to deal with it we found all our networked machines frozen. I was chatting on here on the "would you employ" thread and the result was the multiple posting as it slowly dawned on me/us that there was a problem.

So this seems to be a Phishing Scam that we had to get our techies to sort. So be careful if you get any such message.

Had this kind of crap before.

Worst was a fake antivirus programme which even looks like the real thing. Of course it isn't and once it's popped up you cannot shut the damn thing down.

According to the numerous websites about it there are ways of getting it out of your pc but it's a damn sight easier, and probably quicker, just to reformat the drive which is what I did.

Good av progs help guard against these t***ers that put this crap out but I know of none that are 100% 'bullet proof'.......apart from never connecting to the internet!

This was on our office PC's - that are protected - or so we thought!

But this one got through.

Couple of interesting points - it obviously popped up on all screens as we are all networked - but after we tried the basics to get rid of it via the Administrator/Controler machine that machine then said that no other machines were networked despite our all being able use our machines - or so we thought.

But slowly they all froze.

The techies sorted it out but it took a while.

There's one doing the rounds at the moment allegedly from the Tax office.

It apparently advises you that you are due a tax refund (£580 in my colleague's case) and you must fill in a form with your bank etc details in order to get the refund, and then submit it ... the silly c*w did so!!!!!

Fortunately her anti-virus etc gave her a warning so she stopped but then she was in a panic when she got to work as she was worried that it had actually gone through but was 'pretending' it hadn't to put her further off her guard ... she then spend the following hour making phone calls to her bank etc to tell them of her stupidity ... and she's our Finance Manager!!!!!! 8-)
