Airbags

Just got back from holiday and whilst away we had some air bags fitted to our camper by Dave Newell.

I have been amazed by the difference to the handling 8-) whether its because our camper is quite old and we had not noticed the slow decline in handling, not that I can ever remember it being like it is now :D

As soon as I stepped onto the van step I noticed how stiff the van was, normaly there would be a pronouced lean when I put my modest 14 stone on the step (lol)

Next day we got to experience the handling quality at speed, although unintentionaly as Sue developed a mouth infection and we made an emergency appointment at the local GP, and being sensible and not knowing the area we set off early to find it, which we did with 45mins to spare so I thought we would have a drive round to kill some time and promptly got lost :$

So I ended up flying along trying to find the surgery again, and the way the van went round corners and roundabouts was a revelation, and uneven roads that would normally of made me slow down are no longer a issue as I can maintain speed, without hitting the bumpstops (lol)

The main reason I went for the airbags was since having a tow bar fitted our back end would grind on the floor everytime we went up the M/laws drive *-) which should no longer be a problem as we now have at least 5" extra clearance B-)

A Transit-based Travelhome will have been pretty soft at the rear end to begin with and 20 years of use will inevitably have accentuated that characteristic. Essentially, by adding air-bellows to the rear suspension you've added an extra spring. I remember MMM's John Hunt reporting similar improvements to his similar vintage, similar chassis Auto-Sleepers Legend.
