Guest Tracker
I see that Tesco's profits are again at seriously obscene levels? I can't think why because for us the Tesco shopping experience is poor, locally at least, and they seem to have lost the plot with their ranges as well as with their attitude at times - not happy smiley staff members? By comparison the Morisons experience is much more pleasant and smiley but the Asda experience is still the least expensive although they too seem to be majoring more and more on own label brands? This far West is out of the comfort zone for Waitrose and Sainsburys as there are none near us! What does the team think?
Guest pelmetman
I do not like Tesco or supermarkets as a whole really. I certainly would'nt buy my meat from them I like to know exactly where the meat has come from and that the animals have lead a decent life and been despatched humanely. We always use our local butcher, this way we know where it has come from. It is always excellent quality and is far cheaper than any supermarket rubbish. On holiday this week we found ourselves having to use Tesco as nothing else around, I picked up some fruit and it was disgusting with mould forming on it. Again we use our local farm shop where we can buy seasonal fruit and veg. We never buy ready meals preferring to cook from scratch, I even like to make our own bread. We only use supermarkets for cleaning stuff and dried goods like flour, tea etc and then it is Sainsburys, Morrisons or the Co-op. Give me the small independents any day. RogP
were we can we use either Waitrose or Morrisons. Additionally local butchers for meats is way better. We have a couple near us and one is licenced to sell game meats and exoctics.....anyone tried crocodile meat?...not yet brave enough to give it a go but building up to it. Another local butcher also sells osterich eggs - £17 for one - but it proably makes enough scambled egg to feed an army!

Porky
The answer is simple, come and live in the south west. Loads of local shops and produce with farmers markets in most towns once a week. Yes slightly more expensive than the supermarkets, but it tastes better and supports local businesses. Interesting to hear about the JCB chairman today saying how much they have to import to build their machines now and aint it time we got back to manufacturing. Nice idea but we all want the cheapest don't we?*-)*-)
Guest Tracker
Tried the South West Roy - too wet - so we're off to Norfolk soon where farm shops and roadside nurseries and growers abound. The village we are going to has a small unofficial swapping or buying 'cooperative' for home grown veggies too so I am told - and hope!
Bulletguy
I have used Morrisons for a number of years now. Used to the layout and its easy to shop there, but they have some annoying habits. Price structuring is often illogical with so called 'bargain offers' being more expensive than when not on offer! An example of this is their own brand pasta shapes in packs which are normally on offer at two packs for "only £2.50". Very occasionally they take this amazing offer away and price them at £1 a packet. Doesn't take a mathematician to figure out which is actually the better deal! Another classic is the sugar where they have 1kg packs on permanent offer. Two 1kg packs are about 40pence cheaper than buying a single 2kg pack, but they limit the amount to six packs per customer. Get your six packs, go through the till and pay, then return back for another six. You can do this as many times as you like and they wont bat an eyelid, but let anyone dare try going through the till with eight bags in one go and you will be taken outside for a public flogging! Frustratingly crazy and silly I know, but thats typical Morrisons! Whenever food approaches its sell by date they give the most amazing reductions........like 9pence off £1.99. Wow!! *-) Sometimes food will be mis-priced. A few weeks ago I was looking for 1kg packs of spaghetti. They had none. Only 500g packs. Two shelves full of the stuff but curiously one lot was up at 53p per pack, the other 61p per pack.....yet both were Morrisons own brand and identical weight. When I went to the till I asked the girl to run those through first and tell me the price. "61 pence" she said, "I think I will pay the lower price then", I said. She looked bewildered as I told her the different prices so got a Supervisor to check out what i'd told her. She came back and said "yes he's right, let him have them at 53 pence". Oh and those wire bins full of junk "offers" nobody wants that clutter up aisle space. When will someone trip over one and sue them?!!! But I keep going back. (lol) You just have to watch Morrisons pricing like a hawk. ;-)
Bazza454
Tracker - 2010-10-09 7:15 PM I see that Tesco's profits are again at seriously obscene levels? Hmmm.- I guess it's obscene the level of corporation tax that they contribute to the UK economy.- It must be obscene that a UK company is the worlds 3rd largest retailer.- It certainly is obscene that they are the UKs second largest employer, second only to the inefficient, bloated NHS.- Definitely is obscene that they are continually in the top three retailers in customer satisfaction surveys.- Must be obscene that they have been voted Supermarket of the Year 2010 by the Retail Council.- Disgraceful and obscene that they have an award-winning pension scheme for their 280,000 UK staff.- Absolutely disgraceful and obscene that their Chief Executive, Sir Terry Leahy is viewed as the most respected retailer in the UK, and that he grew up on a council estate in Liverpool.Yup - definitely is obscene that Tesco is a world class company, based in the UK. CliveH
I agree that the shopping "experience" at Tesco is poor. But our local Morrisons (used to be a Safeway) is far worse. But I do admire Tesco for being successful and think Terry Leahy should be a role model in that he kicked off as a shelf filler at Tescos as a student, then went up the ladder to CEO etc. One thing that he does know about is the entire aspect of the Tesco Operation - Whereas excellent TV programmes take a senior boss and drop him in at the sharp end - on the shop floor etc. - I am not sure Leahy would have any problem with that. And that is to his credit. If I now shop at Tesco - I do it online, save my fuel, time and good temper for things I want to do. We have bought small LCD TV's at a fraction of the price of anywhere else - one for the c'van and one for our spareroom. Both work well. We have also bought wooden Garden Furniture from Tesco online and been amazed at the quality and value. - £70 three years ago for a wooden fold away eight sided table with four fold away chairs. Look fantastic in our awning - we even had one comment from a passer by "Look they have even got a dinning table and chairs!" - which to be fair - we have (lol) We oil them every autumn and they get stored in the garage until next season when the big awning goes up again. So for me Tesco is more than alright. For environmental aspects - I prefer the dear old Co-Op with its "Fairtrade" brands - their Fairtrade wines are exceptional. But because of the regional nature of CoOp's - you find some stores are good and others truly dire. My meat I now tend to buy from our local butchers as it is only a tad more expensive but the quality and portion size (chicken breasts for example) are huge in comparison to what you get in a pack from the supermarket. Have started using Lidls because there is one on my way to work and some of their European stuff, like vacuum packed Chorizo sausage, pickled sweat gherkin slices and fruit drinks are great value and only available their. But I hate shopping and am in and out in a flash (lol)
Guest Tracker
Fair comment guys - Tesco may well be a 'world' class company contibuting lots of lovely tax to the economy but if more and more people find the Tesco 'experience' not to their liking and Tesco continue to worship the bottom line above customer satisfaction without ploughing just a small percentage back other companies who thought their market share was unassailable? Guest JudgeMental
Lidl very cheap for fruit and veg and other things, Yes limited goods, and still use Salisbury's, but I dont look at prices and compare, but 4 bags of full shopping in sainsburys will always cost £40 + and in Lidl I am constantly surprised........for instance 4 heavy bags on Friday £23 :-S

Mel B
Tesco do give something back to their customers ... Tesco vouchers ... you simply cannot beat saving 75% on Eurotunnel crossings!!! :->
MandyAndy
Maybe me being a bit thick but why only 75% , we have done upteen crossings and never paid for one, unless you are deducting what we have spent in Tesco's to get them. To be honest most of ours comes from their credit card as I can buy for the business on it and then pay off a the end of the month, hence plenty of advanced bookings for us :-D :-D Mandy
Mel B
I'm talking about the cost to us in Tesco vouchers (in actual monetary value) so we can either spend them on £35 of goods in the shop or use them to get £140 towards a Eurotunnel crossing, hence the 75% difference. Although I do appreciate that some of them are 100% 'free', when we've accrued them from sending in spent toner cartridges, but as you point out we do have to spend in order to save, so some are totally free and some are 'subsidised' but we still come out well on top overall! :-D

Syd
Success comes in many guises, what about the decimated city centres, the now deserted villages, packaging and greenhouse gasses to mention but a few things The original post was about the size of the profits made and regardless of their supposed success their profit really is excessive

You can approach them to resolve pricing anomalies BEFORE you get to the checkout. The girls on the checkouts are ruled by their scanners; if an article scans at 61p, and you think it should be 53p or whatever, there is nothing the girl can do except call a supervisor.
