Question of fuel supplies in France

Hi All

We have been without internet for 4 days and I hoped that by the time we logged on things would be better- it seems we were wrong! We are now about 60 miles north of Florence and will look to get to the French border in the next couple of days and wait there until situation resolved. We were intending to head back on motorways and via Lyons but from these posts that does not look a good idea. Any alternative suggestions welcomed! Gas situation not giving cause for concern yet but it has turned appreciably colder.

Ciao

Hi All

We have now reached Valence in the Rhone Alps. We took the autostrada from Sanremo and continued on the A8 all the way to here. We filled up before we left Italy and have topped up twice since. We have only seen 1 service station on the motorway which had no fuel, all the others not only had fuel, there was no queuing at the pumps. We are told that the area we are in fuel supplies are available but not everywhere. we have had to pay motorway prices, 1.29/1.30€ per litre and have spent about 40€ on tolls but am pretty sure we will be able to reach Luxembourg without further problems. Hope this helps anyone coming behind us

If it helps, I was told last Wednesday that a certain amount of panic buying had left Alsace supermarkets low, and that supplies around Rheims were rather sparse.  However, we were able to get up to 40 litres in Alsace, and there was no limit on quantity on the A26 at Essigny-le-Grand, just S from St Quentin (Total).

I suggest only running down to 50%, and then re-filling.  That way, you have half a tank left if you hit an empty station.

If you're worried about running out, from Valence, take the truck route round Lyon, then carry on to Dijon and take the A36 to Mulhouse, cross into Germany, take the A6 to Karlsruhe, and then Luxembourg and Belgium and back into France nearer Calais.  However, it is a longer way round and the motorways through Luxembourg and Belgium are in relatively poor condition and all are much busier than in France.

I think if you look for a fill when down to 50%, and try to avoid arriving at Calais with less that half a tank, you should be OK, albeit you may need to stick to the autoroutes to find the supplies.

From A26 at Cambrai, you could take A2 to Valenciennes, then A23 Valenciennes - Lille, and then the A25 Lille - Dunkerque.  They slide along the border with Belgium, so if no fuel in France, just cross into Belgium to fill.
