Italian camp site worth a visit (Adriatic Coast)

As with the best ones, we found this site quite by accident while looking for some sunshine early in the year. Having visited the usual sites, we headed across Italy to the Gargano National Park and the only ACSI discount site in the area. On arrival we found that though officially open, they had not even bothered to clean out the accumulation of winter pine needles, so we headed back down the beach road where several small and larger sites were to be found.

 

We chose Camping Adriatico as it appeared to be the most popular and what a pleasure our stay was. The site is split in two by the coast road, as are most along that stretch. The seaward site is right on the magnificent sandy beach and shaded by trees. Here, the facilities are a little open to the elements but as good as we found anywhere during our two months tour of Italy (with one exception, Happy Camping, near Rome) and also had a motorhome service point.

 

On the inland side the site has less shade but is equipped with frames and sunshades that are brought into use during high season. This side has more enclosed facilities, a well equipped bar and, in high season, a shop and restaurant. Though open from 1 April the site has an official opening at the end of May with a free local dish for all on site - buy your own drinks. There are also a several bungalows on site, three of which are lived in by the family so security and supervision are really good. The site is mainly run by a team of brother, a sister and her husband with ‘mamma’ pottering and ‘papa’ doing a bit of gardening.

 

Turning left outside the site gates, you will find two small shops selling most food items that any self respecting Italian would want. It’s a short walk or cycle ride into Vieste on wide pavements and Vieste is well worth a visit, “on foot” though a couple of small supermarkets catering mostly for Germans, can be reached with ease by motorhomes.

 

Their web site, campingadriatico.it states fees for this year of 16 euros but we only paid 13 – discount, they said! Both the brother and sister speak good English, but don’t expect any English to be spoken in the town or even to see another Brit tourist.
