Bulletguy
With the successful rescue of the Chilean miners earlier this week, another 'bit of drilling' was also in the news. Swiss engineers finally completed the Gotthard rail tunnel 2000mtrs beneath the Swiss Alps (the Chilean miners were just 620mtrs down). Cost £6.4 billion, took fourteen years to complete and at 35 miles long is the worlds longest tunnel. Another astonishing feat of engineering. Typical Swiss of course! Here is a clip of the 10mtr diameter drill breaking through. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11548845

Bulletguy
Keithl - 2010-10-17 10:49 AM And it will be another 6 years before any trains pass through!!! Yes....fully operational in 2016. But unlike other countries (no need to mention which ;-) ), when the Swiss do anything they get it right the first time. All down to meticulous planning, excellent management/worker communication and relationships, and naturally a very high level of engineering skills. If you have used their Public Transport system you will know that it's amongst the very best in the world, and this tunnel is just a part of it.
