New Motorhome

Recommended Posts

Just bought Chausson Flash 04 at Nec, (yesterday) for pick up in January.

The next thing is insurance.

Can anyone give me any pointers? Just sold caravan and used CC insurance and very good service.

Highbridge mentioned Safeguard and somebody else but recommendation is the best way.

Thank you :-)

Just renewed my insurance. Returned to Safeguard - I used them for years and they were very helpful, but moved to someone a lot cheaper for a couple of years (no longer insuring motorhomes, seems they were too cheap).

Safeguard use AA for vehicle recovery. Others use RAC or Equity Red Star - you may have a preference.

Safeguard, Comfort and Adrian Flux all within £20 of each other. Saga 40% more. Caravan Club double the cost without vehicle recovery!

Some slight differences in the excess. Safeguard offer unlimited mileage, whereas Comfort and Adrian Flux were limiting mileage but this was irrelevent. Some substantial difference in the value of personal belongings cover.

And don't forget to check the insurers requirements for fitment of Alarm, Immobiliser or Tracker.

Some will insist you fit expensive security costing Hundreds of pounds to save Tens on the premium. At the end of the day go with what you feel best with.

As for recovery not all insurers will include, or even offer, breakdown cover. Make sure you are not paying over the odds for cover to be included. The RAC 'Arrival' scheme from the C&CC will give you cover for unlimited size of MH at a discount from the normal rate.

HTH,

Keith.

I use Comfort and find them very helpfull

Be aware that, on another forum, there is a long debate going on about Comfort coverage when the vehicle is in the care of a garage.

Someone had their 'van stolen whilst it was in for work, and it is purported (with some evidence, and supported by wording in the Comfort policy) that Comfort exclude coverage under such circumstances, and have refused to pay (leaving the owner to claim off the garage insurance, at no little stress to them).

This does not appear to be an exclusion in most policies (and certainly isn't in mine) - it is always worth reading the small print about what is covered and what is not - cheapest is not always best.

edit for spelling.

Welcome to the Chausson Flash 04 owners club!!! :->

We have our insurance with Safeguard which includes full European breakdown cover.

Don't be afraid of going back to them with your better policy price as they likelyhood is that they'll match it.

And its NOT a Fiat!

We have changed insurance provider each year recently. Year 1 the C&C Club insurance was the most competitive. Year 2 and Caravan Guard won hands down. Never found Comfort competitive. Safeguard keep saying give us a try but I don,t like playing one off against another. If they want my business then come in with an attractive offer first time round.

But the annual RAC renewal is different. They WILL negotiate for Arrival Europe. Its boarderline as most vehicle insurers also offer breakdown cover as well.

Same as Mel. We were with Comfort but had to get european cover seperate from saga. With safeguard it's included for whole 12 months. SSo orks out a lot cheaper. A no brainer really.

Agree with you Peter, the european breakdpwn cover with Safeguard is attractive. Also if I recall correctly they have a replace with new vehicle if you have an accident in 1st year. Obviously this needs checking and the small print as well concerning it. We have always found slightly cheaper policies than Safeguard but not the same cover.

It is always difficult to advise which is best value though as each company will aim their policy pricing to be better than others to suit certain parts of the market, be it location where you live, age, etc.

Check also what introductionary no cliams discount they offer based on yoeu car policies and no clians years. Also check the excess you need to pay in event of a claim. The higher the excess the cheaper insurance wil be bit not always worth increasing the excess.

Putting your spouse on the policy cvan also sometine make it a lot cheaper. They like married couples or partners....couples make less claims than single peeps. So even thoiugh your partner may never drive the Motorhome, add them on to policy.

Apply online if you can, it is cheaper than phoning them.

Also use a referral cash back site such as this one http://www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/swimmingbrambles and search for the insurance company and link through to it and get cash back. If you sign up you will get £27 cashback with Safeguard as an example so worth doing it.

If you use my link as it is I would get the cash back, but if you sign up in your own name you will get the cash back.

Thank you all so far for your help.

Being first motorhome, I am very interested in all your comments.

So far CC are cheapest at about £280 but do not include repair cover, but European.

Then Caravanguard, £325 but do include all above.

Most expensive is Safeguard at over £400! However keep the advice coming.
