Prefabs

Can anyone remember the prefabricated houses (prefabs) that were built during and after the war? to replace houses that were bombed.

My uncle Donny had one on Heaton park Manchester which was the largest municiple park in Europe.

They were at the time state of the art, roomy, cosy, large gardens and they had American style fully fitted kitchens with the luxury of a built in fridge, unknown of at the time.

Why are they behind the times over here in building social housing? using traditional methods, why can't they take a leaf out of the Americans book and use industrial factory methods to build houses for social needs, we are going backwards over here.

Went there only a few weeks ago, its a really lovely town.......could not get Sue on the train up the hill though:D ..........she hates heights 8-)

If I remember correctly, they were constructed of white asbestos. The asbestos sheet would 'explode' in a fire as the water held in the asbestos panels flashed to steam. Pieces of shrapnel would fly everywhere and one felt under attack !!

My 'claim to fame' is that I was actually born in a prefab!!!! :D

Unfortunately it was pulled down many years ago when the site was redeveloped to provide 'proper' sheltered bungalows.

My Nana lived in one for many a year and I used to love going round there, she had a massive garden with apples trees. The kitchen was wonderful with the fitted units and fridge - no fridge I've ever used since has made such wonderful ice-cubes!!!!!

We moved to a new 4 bedroomed council house when I was 2 and nearby were loads of prefabs which, when I was around 7/8 I think, were pulled down to create more 'proper' council houses, but once they were cleared away, just leaving the concrete and brick foundations before the building started, we used to have great fun playing 'Star Trek' and pretending it was some weird planet we'd landed on!

It was wonderful going up to Eden Camp in North Yorkshire a few years ago and being able to see a prefab again, unfortunately we weren't able to go inside though. I still miss the prefabs, very well designed and lasted well beyond their planned years. :-S

There are still a couple in use in Birmingham & my mate used to live in a cave house just between Kinver edge and Wolverley, they are still there (the caves that is) they moved into a council bungalow around about 1970.

There is a house in Wolverley village where the front of the house is brick and the rear is sandstone cave.
