Ill be getting my 5month old puppy the rabies vac; on the 1st Nov;

When I got my older dog done Im sure he only needed the one shot then the blood test?

This Vet I have now is a new one and Polish , he is very good I have used him when Teddy was unwell, But! Im sure he told me that my puppy will have his chip inserted then a shot and a couple of weeks later another one??????

Im not happy with this, does anyone remember how many shots their dog needed? Im sure Teddy only had the one.

Ive tried Googleing the information but Im not getting the information I want.

The Vet was telling me how many he needed when in Poland starting up ! but Im sure its different for dogs.

The rabies vaccination is normally just one injection, then the blood test 2-3 weeks later, our little Lily had here jab at around 6-7 months old followed by a blood test.

He might simply be mistakenly saying he needs another 'shot' in the sense that he will have to have another needle put into him to take blood, rather than to actually GIVE another shot ...

Thanks for your replies, I was certain that one was the norm , but these days I dont trust my memory :-D I like this Vet as he is very patient, but young, and my Chihuahua took to him as well but I will tell him that one is the norm even if he has to go and enquire from another Vet. Ill let you know how I get on, the puppy is booked in for the 1st Nov;

We live in France. Just got my new dog jabbed with rabies here, and only 1 shot. Am sure should only be one and with all my animals, only one injection. Blood test 4 weeks later. Hope all goes well with your puppy.

Here in France when I took our puppy for her first rabies jab the vet explained that with the very young dogs the first jab doesn't always take and his recommendation is to have two jabs and then the blood test as it is the test which is expensive. As we had sufficient time before we wanted to get into England that is the path we took. Perhaps that is the norm for young dogs in Poland. Why not ask your vet the reason?

I intend to have a word before the jab, she is only 3lbs so I am a little concerned that they get the dose right, it sounds as if my Vet is more used to the Polish way as well ! I probably wouldnt have worried if he was older and more experienced in this country :-S having said that I am always very satisfied with the Vets in Marquis where we get our other chihuahua treat on our way home.

Just an update on the cost of the rabies' booster in France. The vet only charged me €27 while my vet in England quoted £48 - what a difference in price! Admittedly the English jab would have lasted 3 years instead of one but the French vet assured me it was exactly the same shot she would have received in England.

I paid £46 for the chip and the shot, the Vet did want to give her a second one in two weeks as sometimes the first doesn't take but I said I only wanted the one! I hope I have done the right thing :-S she has the blood test in three weeks. Its a gamble but my other dog only had the one, and being a small breed I worry that too many injections aren't good for them.

I think you are being sensible, with the blood test in 3 weeks that should give plenty of time for the antibodies to build up sufficiently in her system - some vets only wait 2 weeks before the blood test is done so the extra week should certainly help. If it didn't take, I'd be sorely tempted to give it a few weeks before having her injected again to give her body chance to 'recover' a bit - I'm not a great believer in 'overloading' simply for convenience.

We've had 4 dogs done now, and all passed with flying colours, having only had the one initial shot.

Like you Mel, I think a puppy has had enough injections and worming etc; by the time it is five months :-S I would rather wait and see ! if it hasnt taken then I will wait before her next one, yes it will mean another expensive blood test! but that is nothing when compared to losing her.

When first the Pet passports came out, they was always someone telling you scare stories of people losing pets!! I now wonder what they were on about as it always seems very straightforward and only the rabies vac is anything different from our usual treatments.
