Patricia
I loathe the nights drawing in and have just read about the Lighter Later campaing which wants a three-year experiment to have European time in the UK. The clocks would still change in the Spring and Autumn but would always be an hour in advance to that of the present. The organisers have put forward some forceful arguments many of which would seem to appeal to the motorhome fraternity. I for one support the idea. What do others think? The following links may help you to decide: http://www.1010global.org/uk and http://www.saga.co.uk/money/ros-altmann/think-twice-before-changing-the-clocks-saga-tells-government.asp. duffers
I loathe the dark, whether morning or night. but you Southerners can't appreciate how much worse 'the nights drawing in' is further north - not to mention the mornings disappearing into cold and wet and icy conditions At least if we return to GMT it gives a little longer for the icy conditions to improve as winter comes on. personally I think we should hibernate -
Dave Newell
You still get the same number of hours of daylight so I don't see the point. This subject is trundled out every year at this time and nothing ever changes. D.

Why not persuade your workplace or school to change their working hours ?

duffers
why is evening considered more appropriate I CANNOT get out of bed when it's dark, depressing, dingy, dismal, dreich, drizzling, did I say depressingly dark,
Klyne
I can't speak for anyone else but for me it would be far better to have lighter afternoons than having daylight at a time of day I rarely see :D David
Dave Newell
But surely in the depths of winter we get neither? In December and January we don't see daylight till well past 7.00 AM and its getting dark by 4.00 in the PM. So what will happen if we don't set the clocks back by an hour for winter? it won't get light till well past 08.00AM and we will have daylight (such as it is) till almost 5.00 PM? BFD ( Big ******* Deal). As I said before you still only get the same number of hours of daylight no matter what you set your clock to! And anyway, who do you think is going to listen to this campaign? We have it every year and nothing changes. In case nobody has noticed there are a few more important things happening in the world, like a global recession, like major spending cuts in the UK public sector etc, etc, etc! Does anyone really expect a government person or persons to pick this old chestnut up and run with it? Really?? D. D.

On your point above, actually Tim Yeo, who is a fairly senior Conservative is keen to see a change so there might be some influence there. Bulletguy
Patricia - 2010-10-29 4:48 PM I loathe the nights drawing in and have just read about the Lighter Later campaing which wants a three-year experiment to have European time in the UK. Entirely agree. We have enough gloom and doom in this country with months of dark nights and just a few weeks of lighter evenings (and even then it's dark by 2230hr). Ever likely 'brits' spend more time watching television than almost any other nation in the world! I enjoy sitting out with a beer late evening in summer.......but only in Europe. I never do that here in the UK. I'm afraid this campaign will get shot to bits by Farmers and potty parents. We tried it before. The Farmers moaned they need the early morning light to work by......strange considering Tractors are fitted with powerful lights. Parents moaned that their little precious ones would get snatched by the street paedo's which lurk on EVERY street corner. These same parents are so thick they cannot comprehend that if it's lighter in the morning, it will be darker by mid afternoon which I would have thought posed a greater danger than the morning. Not to mention that most kids are now trundled to and from school in cars, even if only a ten minute walk away. *-)
