Halogen Ovens

Bob - you should also consider the 'double skillet' and a separate electric hotplate as alternatives. The double skillet, which is like 2 deep sided frying pans which link together (you turn one upside down and place it on top of the other to form a hob-top oven), can be used on the gas as well as the electric hotplate, and the hotplate can be used with other things too and of course you've got a couple of good quality frying pans as well.

We rarely stay on sites, never mind have hook-up, and when on holiday in France using aires I cooked 3 roast chickens with roast potatoes in my double skillet which were absolutely scrumptious, and it did a lovely pizza too one night when we were tired and wanted something quick - it only took 15 minutes to cook!

As for the halogen ovens - have a mooch round the web as there are various comments about them, some are an absolute waste of money apparently and don't last very long ... I must admit I do see quite a few of the 'bowls' at car boot sales minus the top as its gone kaput. :-S

Hi Mel

totally agree with you re the double skillet, we have had one for a couple of years now and think its great. So why are we considering a halogen oven? We usually go to campsites and hook up so if we are paying for electric already we might as well use it to cook as well and save the gas.Ihave looked in TJ Hughes and they are selling a 7 litre oven for less than £30 which will be more than big enough for us

Bob - just check on the quality it, there are some crappy ones out there - if you do a search on the internet for reviews you should get some useful info on the model you're looking at.

And remember, if you have an electric hob you can still use your double skillet, and can also use the hob separately too, and it will take up a lot less space than the Halogen oven. But, as with everything, you do what you think is right for you chuck! :-D

Mel, totally agree, interesting though that neither Curry's or Comet sell halogen ovens. I should say that we had a problemwith the double skillet last year, the top half became distorted. We took it to the Peterboro show where J&F had a stand and they replaced it free of charge immediately, even though they did not think it was a manufacturing fault. Excellent customer service. Will let you know what we decide re the oven

We have a JML one and use it daily at home - the amount of fat in some food which we can now grill easily (long story!) is unbelievable. If you like crispy bacon this is the one for you :-D

I wouldn't use one in the motorhome though - not sure on the power needed but the sheer size of it (mainly the glass bowl which is also quite heavy) and the heat from the lid as it cooks would stop me using it. We prefer the BBQ outside whenever possible or the double skillet if we have to cook inside. ;-)

An update : we cooked our first meal in the halogen oven last night. It seemed a shame to bring it all the way to Spain and then not try it. We had roast chicken and potatoes which were excellent. 3lb chicken cooked in about an hour and a half. The oven really came up to expectations. One thing though if you are considering gettig one, we bought a 7 litre size because we could store under the sink, even though there are only 2 of us it really wasnt big enough, we needed the 11litre to cook everything. The double skillet still in daily use but we could not have fitted the chicken in the skillet

Hi all, we have a large JML oven and use it in the van and at home. We have had it for over a year and used it at sites from Scotland to Devon having done over 5000 miles last year. Turn the lid over, the cable inside the bowl and the whole lot slides nicely into the gas oven on our van for transport. It uses about 6 amps so should be okay on most sites. Hope this helps. "A"

A none motorhoming friend of ours has been using halogen ovens for over three years now and thinks they are great and she uses it everyday for all sorts of food,

The problem is she has never had one that lasted more that 12 months before breaking down and needing replacing under the guarantee, which has been honoured every time she has had four different makes/types.

This may be why the likes of Comet and Currys don,t sell them. It would be too much hassle to them.

Unless you are full time motorhoming and using it every day I suppose they would last much longer.
