Randonneur
Just got back from the Uk and reading the posts. Our Grandson was in Capetown and was robbed of his Passport and money. To get back to the UK he had to apply to the British Consulate in Capetown for an Emergency Passport to enable him to get back to the UK, this cost about £80 and only lasts until you arrive at a UK airport and then it is taken off you and you have to apply for a normal one. The lady at the Consulate who we dealt with was brilliant and phoned us here in France to keep us updated of the position as we had to send money over. Problem is that to receive money you have to show your Passport and before you can get an emergency passport you have to pay for it so it is a catch 22 situation. She went with This was only a couple of months ago. He was told at the airport at Capetown that because his visa had run out he would have to pay about £300 if he wanted to go back to South Africa, which I doubt very much that he would do. Oh the joys of Grandchildren.

RonB
Over some forty odd years travelling we've lost, forgot (left in hotel) our passports on three occasions - not a bad average mlud. Each time we have just carried on until Calais/Dover, faced a few relevent questions, as has been said before, and then passed through. Its nothing to worry about and if some of the types making a landing on our shores can get in I'm sure we can.
