I think I must be getting old as the Ark Royal was the bees kness when I joined the Navy in 74 :D

So now we have no carriers left I should think its a good time for Argentina to try their hand again :D (lol) (lol)

I remember the TV series they did about it with Rod Stewart's song as the theme tune ... :-S

I put the Ark Royal in the same league as the Royal Yacht Britannia for nostalgia and British pride ... such a shame they're both out of action now.

Thought we still had HMS Illustrious (RO6)! B-)

But with no Aircraft to fly from HMS Ark Royal it would be a bit pointless keeping it commisioned would'nt it?

Our Government will probably sell the Ark Royal to them so they can do it :D

Current government thinking is that we now have enough of our troops stationed down there to deter any attack.

I know it wasn't in commission in 74, but it was the hope of this baby sailor at the time to get drafted to it when they had finshed fitting it out :D

In the end my first ship was the Devonshire, laid down in 1958.....the same age as me (lol) (lol)

my cousin served on the previous Ark Royal as part of the crew on its last voyage to bring it home for decommisioning.

Although he was only on her a short time its one of his most fondest memories of his naval career and he still sheds a tear now when we talk to him about it.

Sad the latest Ark Royal is also going the same way I guess there's little call for naval capacity of this scale when you think a missile can be sent half way round the world to take out a suspect rucksack in downtown Afghanistan.

You could argue it is not a sad time at all and rejoice in the fact that it is considered unneccessary to have such a financial drain floating around.

No I am not a pacifist by the way, but looking forward it would be comforting to think our grandchildren might not have to fight wars. Unrealistic maybe as the world is always at war.:-(:-(

That particular "Ark Royal" was decommissioned in '78 and scrapped in '85.

The one now being decommissioned was launched in 1981 and been in service since '85.
