We recently bought this camper after owning Fiat vans previously. The camper itself is fine, and meets our requirements. However the 1.9 td engine is lacking umph! inclines and head winds leave us standing and lorries drag us back as they surge past! Does anyone know how engine performance can be improved, or am I forever to be the" old git" with a stream of traffic behind?

I had the same problem with my first motorhome, it was based on a Fiat 2.0 jtd. On any hill the speed quickly dropped so I had to move into 2nd gear and watch every vehicle pass me.

I cured it by having the engine "chipped" by TB Turbo at Lancaster. It increased the power by 25% and hills became a lot less of a problem. I had the motorhome for 7 years and it never caused any problems.

I have just checked and unfortunately TB Turbo has now fallen victim to the recession and are no longer trading. Maybe some other member can recommend a good company.

Can you confirm what your top speed is normally please? The reason I ask is that there is something called 'sleepy van syndrome' and one symptom is that the turbo waste gate 'sticks' shut, the engine then feels the back pressure from the turbo and will only go up to a certain speed and no more in order to protect the engine etc. If this is the cause of your speed restriction it is a simple thing to get sorted and can transform a vehicle.

Our first 'proper coachbuilt', a 1991 Talbot based motorhome, had this problem and the seller could only get 60mph out of it, fortunately a friend of ours had just bought a van on the same base and had had a simlar problem so a quick phone call to him to clarify and we were sure that it could be cured - it cost £25 (which the seller paid) and we could easily get over 70mph out of it.
