Benidorm

One place we've never been - Benidorm. From past comments it sems you either love it or hate it so would like to see for ourselves. So looking for campsite recommendations. We do use ACSI, appear to be couple of sites nearby but can't see anything in the place itself. We intend to be away 3 months or so, get away from heavy heating bills here!! aim is to meander our way to Portugal. Haven't been there for 4 years - understand that 'wild' camping now is not so acceptable - is this right. I'm sure some of you well travelled lot can put us right on these points.

Earlier this year enquired about routes etc for Sicilly, so many thanks to all those who gave advice - well we spent 4 months around Italy, including 1 month in Sicilly. We both loved the country, especially my wife - I've only just recovered from the trauma of Italian drivers!!!

Hi Jupe

We have just come back from Italy too, only got as far as Pompeii though. Ihave not recovered from Italian drivers yet-totally mad and totally without consideration.Mind you if you had todrive on those roads all the time you would go mad fairly quickly. We are looking to head to the Benidorm area towards themiddle of January but not sure about sites yet- I did reada disturbing review about Camping Almafra the other day. Any ideas yourself yet?

We are on Camping Arena Blanca, Benidorm.

Excellent facilities, covered pool, small shop, small restaurant and bar,

0ne and a half miles from beach, regular bus service just outside entrance

Quiet normally.

In Benidorm there is something for EVERY taste you just need to find it

You pays yer money and takes yer choice I guess.

I'm in the "you either love Benidorm of hate it" camp.

As it happens, we live only about 20 miles away from the place........but because we are inland, it is about a million miles away from it in cultural terms. We hate the place.........to us it seems to typify everything that is bad about "Brits".........beer bellies, tattoos, lager, chips, the Sun "newspaper", racism, intolerance, superior attitude, et al.

This is of course purely a personal opinion; everyone is different; and there are many thousands of people who love the place and the company, and keep going back to it.

They don't need to speak a word of Spanish, or eat any of that "foreign muck" food. If they so wish they can gorge on full English breakfasts all day, before getting ratted on lager all night and vandalising, littering, fighting, then retching, before repeating the next day.

Good for them if that's their bag.

They, and all other tourist visitors, put a load of money into the local economy so that's a great thing for Spain.

But to us Benidorm is "Blackpool with sunshine but without the class"....... about as far away from real Spain as it's possible to get.

We prefer Spain.

Please don't shoot the messenger here........this is just our personal view; others are free to completely disagree.

In benidorm at mo, been here for two months, staying for another 3 months, Staying at La Torretta, which is behind benidorm palace, the longer u stay the cheaper it gets. Over 30 days and the rate is 13 euros 50 cents per day inc 4kw of electricity. It has a nice pool and bar/ restaurant, toilet and showers which are cleaned evry day. about 15 mins walk to beach.

never was one for all this blackpool with sunshine crap, never seen the beach cleaned evry day at blackpool for instance, but as is said evryone to thier own, Benidorm has it all if u are prepared to find it, small friendly pubs to large clubs with entertainment, (which comes in handy when u r here a while) In the old town u will find tapas bars which are frequented by the spanish and those who want something different. yes there is a large intake on a weekend with the stag, birthdays, anniversaries and whatever celebrations, and on the whole it I`ve never seen any trouble,in fact we think its quite enterertaining watching them. We come evry year but still find time to visit other countries

BGD- what was that about intolerance, superior attitude, et al??????

benidorm is everything to everyone. yes, beer bellies and all day breakfast, but as others have pointed out, tapas and piano bars also abound. t seems plain where BGD 'hangs out' when in benidorm!!!

We go to Benidorm most winters for 6 or 7 weeks.

I agree that it caters for all sorts and can be as noisy or as quiet as you want. I like cycling, walking, reading, enjoying the scenery etc and also enjoy the friendliness of the campers on site.

You will find most of the rest of Spain closed down in the winter. Altea has been mentioned and the site there Arena Blanca is nice but the town is semi dormant during the winter - still nice though.

You will find all nationalities on the campsites within Benidorm - Norwegians, Swedes, Danes, Dutch, Germans, French, Spanish, Brits of course and many others.

Most of the campsites are to a high standard and there are probably half a dozen good ones within the town boundaries. El Raco is probably as good as any and accommodates maybe 700 motorhomes. I've often estimated that there are maybe 2500 piches within the town.

I'll warn you that if you do go, you'll certainly return!

Just a small correction mate

Camping Arena Blanca is just a couple hundred yards up the road from El Raco so it is definately in Benidorm not in Altea

hi, we are preparing yet again for our 3 month trip to benidorm in january.can't wait. can't quite agree with BGD though, we have NEVER experienced any of the the things mentioned,is this because we have only ever visited benidorm in winter !!!!! we agree with davew, benidorm is the place "TO BE",it has something for everyone whether you want peace and quiet or a lively bar.the thing with benidorm is that there is LIFE & PEOPLE around, not like many other towns where you can be the only ones walking on the promenade for instance. the only other place we quite like to visit is santa pola, although not in the same league as benidorm.

as for portugal, our friends thought they would give it a go last year, within a week they had returned to benidorm, they hated portugal.they said it was very expensive, the campsite was full of stray cats, and to add insult to injury,it rained for the whole 7 days they were there.

Benidorm has 2 beaches divided by a headland, one commercialised where you find the package tourists, one less commercialised that is more Spanish. Within a few miles you have Altea or Villajoyosa in the other direction - very pretty and very Spanish. Plus what is probably the best year round climate on the European mainland.

Javea is Great too.

If I ever manage to get away in the winter it will probably be on my own and wife can fly over now and again....

Benidorm looks like at least there is some life and people about....what are the best campsites please? and do they take ACSI cards out of season. plus do you need to book in advance?

I like to cycle around, walk, have a swim so an indoor heated pool would be nice....and wi fi :-D

The best campsites - and this is of course subjective - are El Raco, Villasol and La Torretta.

All are within a few minutes walk of the beach, sea front shops and bars.

I've tried them all. Will probably go back to El Raco this year.

You can't pre-book on any really, you turn up and take your chance. The ones I have experience of would laugh at the sight of an ASCI card. The reception staff on these sites are not CC like in their welcomes! Bit arrogant, doing you a favour sort of thing.

A few days is expensive, typically 30+ euros a night, 14 day stays drop to about 18 to 20 euros per night, 30+ days it goes down to 13 - 15 euros. All include, some electricity (metered), sat tv, decent facilities on site.
