Fuel Injector Pump Update

Pass me that brandy & make it a double (!)

Just got my Avondale 5ELX back from the motorhome hospital. I think it must have been in intensive care & when I got the bill I was nearly in the next bed :-(

£1,098.29 this included £80 recovery fee from my local garage to the garage where the work was carried out. I was told that they have refurbished my old one & it now has a one year warranty.

How much does a brand new one cost? Does anyone know? & what makes this piece of kit so expensive?

Apparently we've been extremely unlucky as these components rarely breakdown much before the motor has covered 100,000 miles. We have done 29,000!!!

Looks like a few more nights 'wild/free camping' (Sh!....don't tell anyone) nights starting very soon. Well it has been a long lay-off for us due to hospital appointments but yippee I'm passed fit for the immediate future anyway. So hopefully soon it will be TTFN ..... Don't forget if you see us hiding away call over for a cuppa.

Oh yes! I did ask about putting additives into the tank but the guy who did the repair was quite adamant NO NEVER. *-)

I'm surprised they could refurbish a worn one. The reason injector pumps are expensive is the very tight tolerances the components are machined to and matching components during assembly. The newer generation of common rail systems don't use an injector pump as such but a very high pressure pump (some systems are running a 3000 Bar, yes that's right 45,000 psi!).

It's possible that the company that carried out the work on your vehicle sent the pump away to a specialist firm for it to be refurbished rather than did the work themselves. A rough-and-ready GOOGLE-search suggests that a fully-refurbished pump with a 12-months warranty could cost around £500 retail. If you wanted an accurate price for a brand-new pump, then provide your Avondale's VIN-number to Fiat agent and they should be able to tell you.

It's annoying when vehicles don't cooperate with their owners' expectations, but little one can do about it. Last year my 2005 Transit-based Hobby needed its turbo-charger cleaned after around 17000 miles. Evidently, the type of variable-geometry turbo-charger fitted to my Transit has a reputation for this sort of problem and there's no certain way of guarding against it. The overall cost was just over £700 of which £38 was for parts, about £200 for specialist dismantling and cleaning of the turbo (by Turbo Technics) and the rest for labour. It's quite likely, if the repair had been made by a Ford main agent, that the turbo-charger would have been replaced rather than cleaned and the overall cost doubled.

I hope that the injectors dont go down as the corruption from the pump signals the comp to shut down the injection system. Now is the time to get the united diesel additive and bung in a bit of 2-stroke oil as well. But hey its your money sod what anyone else says esp. those in France as their diesel has different mix, the commercial boys know all about this and your costs were a lot less than mine as injectors are 200 quid each.

Possibly more helpful; the current prices for High Pressure Fuel Pump Fiat Ducato 2.3JTD 2002 to 2006

Fiat New item 500371947 £795.42

Fiat recon item 71723597 £601.57

Euro Car Parts recon £250

All would get trade discount of at least 10%, all prices are plus VAT and all would attract a surcharge if old unit not returned.

We use the Euro Car Parts units all the time and have had no issues with them. Supply can be shaky but we have just ordered one and it will be here this afternoon.
