Somali Pirates free the Chandlers

Some good news for a change.

Most will now know that eventually the Chandlers have been set free by Somalian Pirates after 13 months in captivity. News is still a bit sketchy (understandably), but it appears a ransom amount of around £350k was paid 'raised by relatives'. Britain recently paid £5.8m to Somalia for 'peace and reconciliation work' so you have to draw your own conclusions on that.

Apparently a Somalian living and working in Britain as a London taxi driver became instrumental in the case and helped negotiate. He had the unenviable job of driving them out through Mogadishu.....probably the worst place on planet earth to be!

So the Chandlers are out and soon to be back in the UK. What was gained by the UK 'refusing' to pay a ransom? Nothing. The Pirates still got money in the end.....just that the Chandlers had to spend 13 months waiting.

There are currently over 500 people and no less than 25 ships being held captive by Somalian pirates.

An often overlooked fact is at the time of the Chandlers capture they were 600 miles from Somalia. It was the furthest these pirates had been known to travel out.
