deerhound Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Encountered hellish speedbumps over a distance of about 3/4mile on the A713 at the village of Patna in Ayrshire. These are real bumps/ramps which have to be taken in motorhome at about 2 MPH up ,on top, then down other side, few hundred yards then more, the work of the Devil these things! I will make sure never to go that road in my sports car which has very low ground clearance. >:-)
Tony Jones Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 I've often wondered whether speedbumps which force you to go much slower than the legal limit could themselves be illegal - surely the authorities are "obstructing the highway?" If there's a good reason they want you to stick at (say) 20mph (eg near a school, or a quiet residential cul-de-sac), they should first get the lower limit approved for that stretch of road, THEN if there's evidence people are ignoring it, put physical barriers (eg bumps) in place. But those should always be such as to allow vehicles to travel at the legal limit without damage. Anyone fancy taking this on legally????
deerhound Posted November 18, 2010 Author Posted November 18, 2010 I agree, near me is very small row of houses say about 12, they got council to put chicanes on road at either end of row, this consistes of acute figure S where you have to almost double back on yourself to negotiate them at crawling speed and in anything other than middle size family car you have to take the high kerbs they put down which throws the steering end to end, but last year with heavy snow fall the snow plough went through plough down and ripped the lot out, damaged to plough no doubt but they have built them again, only this time I notice they are coming apart with bits scattered on road. I for one would never consider buying a property anywhere these things are installed, imagine nipping out to shop and having to take the Pilgrimage each and every time. Another thing local town where I shop about 5 miles away their council have now erected height barriers and fenced the entire sea front, this was to stop the travelling people. >:-)
colin Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Our local council have recently removed chicanes (of the one way give way type) in a nearby village due to the increase in head on acidents, the best type of speed bumps are those 'split' ones where a van (or abulance or fire engine) can drive straight over with out stopping :D
