duetto owner Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 with eire about to go belly up is it best to wait as late as possibe before getting euros? also another delemma when we get back will left over euros be worth a lot less. are supermarket rates any better than banks and travel agents for exchage?
Guest JudgeMental Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 over the last few months (have been watching closely as hoping to buy new van when I sell mine) £ has trickled down from 1.22 to 1.12 it rose again recently to arround 1.18 and now fallen yet again to 1.17 as too your question re Euro who knows! dont worry about the euro it's the pound that has devalued the most of all European currencys! what makes you think Ireland dropping out, the Sun newspaper? you cant get cash at french supermarkets? can you? we never change money back just keep it for next trip we just get money out via nationwide card as we go along, at least you still get commercial rate of exchange not tourist rate*-)

Answer to first questions? If you knew you be the richest forex trader in the world! If we knew, we'd be the richest forex traders in the world, and we wouldn't tell you! :-)For a fair, reliable, foreign exchange service, try Post Office Travel Money. Order on line, pay by debit card, money delivered free by regular postie if you get over £500. Generally better rates than travel agents, and to be honest, no-one is going to get rich on the difference between their rates and the next best. As the Judge says, keep what you get back with, and use it to prime the pump next year. If you change it back you will get a lower rate, if you keep it, it is already Euros, so incurs no further commission.
Guest pelmetman Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 At least you wont have the problems we had in 92 when Britain was kicked out of the ERM, we were in France :D and trying to find a bank who would give us any cash was a nightmare *-)
Brambles Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 I have always found travelex online to have the best rates and order it to pick up at Eurohub office or Dover docks. After ordering if the rate swings in your favour you cancel it and order again although you do have to wait a few days for refund on 1st order. I also purchased going to the travelex website via a cash back website and get 0.5% back. All adds up and this year they paid me commission on the cancelled order as well. 'this is the cashback site I use' which is also useful for many other online orders to get cashback. Jon
PJay Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 If you have a tesco extra near to you, which has a foreign currency desk, they give good exchange rates plus you get your tesco points!so an extra saving We don't change euros back after trip, just use them next time
David Dwight Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 PJay tesco dont give points anymore on Money exchange, we bought in Aug and they had stopped doing it then. But their rate was the best going at the time.
art338 Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Slightly off track I have a friend moving back to the UK from France, he says all the costs are going up and he sees no future living there.

Will still buy from Tesco,(With my Nationwide debit card) as it is the most convienient place for us to get our currency

Haven't learnt much from the thread have you? the high street will only offer tourist rate M&S today 1.11 *-) Post office 1.13 :-S
Basil Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 We used to use the Post Office but have used Tesco's for the last few times, not sure if you call them 'High Street' but they are normally slightly better than the Post Office especially if they have a PO in store as well as a currency exchange. You still get points if you use a Tesco credit card and there is no fees (least ways last time I used it) for Credit card use. Though I normally get mine through the post as if you order £500 or more it is post free. Todays Tesco rate is 1.1367 to the pound, not much different to the POffice quoted by the Judge but still a little better. Bas
Guest pelmetman Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 How much difference in cash between £500 from the PO and an online firm, are we talking tens of pounds or a couple of quid (?)
Andy_C Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 pelmetman - 2010-11-22 5:19 PM How much difference in cash between £500 from the PO and an online firm, are we talking tens of pounds or a couple of quid (?) Looking at a snapshot in time, Travelex and the PO are pretty much equal. With Visa Europe, i.e. drawing cash from an ATM and assuming no loading or fees imposed by the card company, I reckon you would be about EUR16 better off. AndyC
Guest JudgeMental Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 and with nationwide you will get 1.17 but charged 1% so on £1000 you are still better of by 23 euro?....... and a hell of a lot more convenient then schlepping round the high street
Mel B Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Each 1c difference in the rate on £500 exchanged gives an extra €5.00: Euro Rate: €1.10 x £500 = €550.00 €1.11 x £500 = €555.00 €1.12 x £500 = €560.00 Or simply, for every £100 changed, you get an extra €1!!! For holiday spending unless you are changing a large amount of money, you've got to ask is it worth the hassle of going to anywhere but a local bureau de change if the rates are very close. However, if you're spending loads of dosh, like Eddie on a new camper bought in Euroland, it can make a heck of a difference.
Guest pelmetman Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Thanks people B-) I think it will be a trip to the PO, as going anywhere else will cost me more in fuel than I gain :D
