Guest Tracker Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 Has anyone any experience of FON with or without the BT freebie access? This enables free 'worldwide' wifi access - or at least when in range of a hotspot - to all BT wifi and FON hotspots. The big plus should come from allowing all other BT Internet customers who sign up for the scheme to 'piggy back' on your own broadband connection in return for which you are allowed free internet access via any other BT Internet user who has registered for it. Well that's the theory and if it works it might be at best a good solution to mobile internet and at worst just another mobile option?

Guest pelmetman Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Do you have to be a BT internet customer to get access (?) If not how do you join :D

If not how do you join :D Yes you do need to be a BT Internet customer. Although I would not be surprised if some hackers have a way of using the facility without being a customer. But there are lots of different packages available from them. make sure you get the right one for your requirements. Just Google:- "BT Internet" to see what's available.
Porky Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Yes I have used it in Spain (have signed up for FON) very successfully, although I do have have a 1.2m wifi arial*-) In the UK my laptop will pick up hotspots fairly close by.

If not how do you join :D No you don't have to be a BT customer Fon ia a seperate organisation that BT have teamed up with to, supposedly, improve hotspot capability' See http://corp.fon.com/ Personally I have had no success whatsoever getting onto a Fon hotspot either here or abroad. I can get onto my own one, indoors??, but the strength of the Fon signal is so pathetic that outside it is not available. That is my experience, a not very favourable one. Bas
