flicka Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 Received this one today, not sure if it is authentic but not beyond some I think. "bought a bunch of stuff, over £150, & I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was handing me the bags. I saw a cash-back of £40. I told her I didn't request a cash back & to delete it. She said I'd have to take the £40 because she couldn't delete it. I told Her to call a supervisor. Supervisor came & said I'd have to take it.. I said NO! Taking the £40 would be a cash advance against my Credit card & I wasn't paying interest on a cash advance!!!!! If they couldn't delete it then they would have to delete the whole order. So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order & re-scan everything! The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I signed & a cash-back of £20 popped up. At that point I told the cashier & she deleted it. The total came out right. The cashier agreed that the Electronic Pad must be defective. Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad was defective because she NEVER offered me the £40 at the beginning. Can you imagine how many people went through before me & at the end of her shift how much money she pocketed? Just to alert everyone. My co worker went to Milford , Sainsburys last week. She had her items rung up by the cashier. The cashier hurried her along and didn't give her a receipt. She asked the cashier for a receipt and the cashier was annoyed and gave it to her. My co worker didn't look at her receipt until later that night. The receipt showed that she asked for £20 cash back. SHE DID NOT ASK FOR CASH BACK! My co-worker called Sainsburys who investigated but could not see the cashier pocket the money. She then called her niece who works for the bank and her niece told her this. This is a new scam going on. The cashier will key in that you asked for cash back and then hand it to her friend who is the next person in the queue. Please, please, please check your receipts right away when using credit or debit cards! This is NOT limited to Sainsburys; they are one of the largest retailers so they have the most incidents. I am adding to this. My husband and I were in Sainsburys and paying with credit card when my husband went to sign the credit card signer he just happen to notice there was a £20 cash back added. He told the cashier that he did not ask nor want cash back and she said this machine has been messing up and she canceled it. We really didn't think anything of it until we read this email. I wonder how many "seniors" have been, or will be, "stung" by this one???? To make matters worse ...THIS SCAM CAN BE DONE ANYWHERE, AT ANY RETAIL OR WHOLESALE LOCATION!!! BEFORE LEAVING THE CHECK-OUT........CHECK YOUR RECEIPT!!!!! THIS COULD HAPPEN ANYWHERE. CHECK YOUR RECEIPT BEFORE LEAVING THE STAND. I'VE SEEN PEOPLE DO JUST THAT. NOW I'LL START! "
duffers Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 not true - according to snopes anyway http://www.snopes.com/fraud/atm/cashback.asp you'd have to have a really big shop not to notice an extra £40 tacked on the end
Hymer C 9. Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 Thank you true or not it is possible so well worth that extra minute to check.
Dave Newell Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 This is why you are asked to sign the shops copy of the receipt if you have cashback. If you get home and find you've been done like this contact the shop immediately and it will be traceable because you didn't sign the shop's copy. D.
Tony Jones Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 I've only ever been offered cash back on DEBIT cards, never on credit cards. Surely the cr card issuers don't allow cashback? It would show at their end simply as part of the purchase, so they wouldn't be able to take their extra cut of it.
art338 Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Can someone explain this cash back thingy. Why do they give money away? Is it in the form of a store ticket to bring the customer in again. Or can you walk out the shop with the cash having just paid for your goods. If I spend 60 and they give me back 40 surely thats good. art
Tony Jones Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Sadly no - they take it out of your bank account :'( ! It only works for Debit Cards, and only in certain shops (including most supermarkets though). They check out your shopping, tell you the total, and when you put in your Debit Card they ask if you'd like any cash back. If you do, they add that amount on before you put in your PIN number. At least, that's how it's supposed to work.
Bulletguy Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 art338 - 2010-11-24 6:41 PM Can someone explain this cash back thingy. Tony is right in what he says re. cash being taken in store only from Debit cards. But i'm wondering if any are aware of another totally different kind of 'cash back' scam which is warned about on eBay where a few undesirables lurk? They tend to target people selling vouchers. The buyer makes an instant payment, it goes into your paypal account, the Sellers sends off vouchers.....sale completed so everyone happy. A month or so goes by but the buyer then starts a dispute procedure in eBay against you claiming non-receipt of goods. Ebay settle with the buyer......but then that money is withdrawn from your account. So the dishonest buyer has the voucher value plus what they paid you. You can guard against this happening and in fairness it is a rare occurrence. I very nearly fell into the trap myself until I received an email from an observant eBay member who warned me what this guy was up to and told me about his track record. Fortunately though I had received payment from the buyer I had not sent the vouchers off so I refunded his payment, told him I was reporting the matter to ebay as attempted fraud, and contacted eBay. A day later his account had been blocked and he was suspended from eBay.
