nightrider
My grandson that works for me asked me for a payrise this morning saying that he had not had one for 4 years. I looked at him in shock and amazement, a payrise a *******payrise, what do you think I am a walking bank, have you not seen the price of petrol and diesel? there are thousands of guys being thrown out of work with the risk of having their homes repossessed and you are asking for a payrise? In point of fact I said I was thinking of laying you off and taking on a Polish labourer to cut costs. The cheek of the lad, trying to take advantage methinks. Brambles
knight of the road - 2011-01-15 6:01 PM My grandson that works for me asked me for a payrise this morning saying that he had not had one for 4 years. Wrong answer knight. Why should he not ask for a pay rise after 4 years. You have a responsibility as his employer to improve his skills and his worth to you. If you had been doing your job properly you would have increased his value to you and revenue you make from him per hour. As a result you should be able to afford to pay him more as you you should have turned him into a valuable asset worth retaining. If he has had the courage to ask you for a rise you should give him the respect of giving a decent reply as well as expecting him to say why he wants a rise. You may find he now finds altrernative employment so he can earn a decent living. If you genuinly cannot afford to pay him more or justify more pay, them have a good hard think about how you can increase the revenue he earns for you, and no harm discussing this with him, if he understands he needs to earn more for the businness and you discusss with him you might be surpised what he comes up with. He has 4 years extra skills and experience now, and that is worth something. On the other hand you do need to make your business work and if you are carrying him, then maybe it is time you encouraged him and helped him to find a better job where he will further his skills and carreer and earn more money. But to rebuff him the way you have is totally wrong in this day and age...he has a future to think of and not be stuck in a rut on low wages working for what I would regard as a pretty poor employer if after 4 years you cannot give him a rise. kelly58
It go's back to the old saying NEVER work for friends or relatives they will abuse their position and your goodwill .I had a boss who pleaded poverty and could not afford a pay rise sob sob but we found out he had ordrerd a brand new Merc so when it arrived we all said it looks like your new car is worth more to you than us so we all agreed and walked out and left him to run his business himself and we all managed to get another and better job and the tight arse had a job replacing his lost staff, you can always vote with you feet because employers do not own you they are only paying for your services and loyalty. Brambles, You failed to take my post as it was meant to be taken, tongue in cheek. My grandson does rather well out of me for a 23 year old and is well rewarded for using his initiative. My way of thinking is that whatever success we make of our 3 man operation my family benefit from it, there are of course the hidden benefits that he gets such as all his protective working gear is provided, driving lessons paid for by me and as he is a talented artist I pay for his art tuition at night school, he has also been provided with various equipment such as his own mower, strimmer and hand tools and is able to work weekends for himself to bring in extra cash, so all in all he is not doing too bad, any unexpected work that comes in on a daily basis he recieves an equal cut between the 3 of us. He has a little saturday morning round of his own which will give him the opportunity of striking out on his own as and when he passes his driving test and developes a repartee with his customers. Mel B
Malcolm I couldn't decide whether you were joking or not, so instead didn't bother to respond. If you don't want people to get the wrong end of the stick (no pun intended! :D ), why not make it a bit clearer .... that's what smilies are there for, whether you like them or not, they make the meaning of the message much clearer. It's no different to being in a pub having a chat with mates and telling the story with a smie on your face, rather than a look of scorn. If you don't want to go toooooo overboard, there are various levels of smilies, this is how I interpret them: :D Daft funny :-S Puzzled funny :-) Funny :-D Mildly funny :-> Very funny (lol) Hilarious

nightrider
My grandkid has his own small flat but he is not what you would call domesticated where cooking is concerned. That is why first thing in the morning we head for Morrisons supermarket restaraurant where I fill him up with the full English, you can't do our kind of job on an empty stomach (lol) I am not used to using smilies, after all world famous writers dont use them do they (?)
