Wendytrig
Hi, we're hoping to go to Greece May/June with our border collie, visiting probably Lefkas and Pelloponese. Can anyone advise re taking dogs to these areas, are they allowed on beaches as he LOVES the sea. We are investigating camping on board on the ferry, maybe Ancona to Igoumenitsa returning Patra to Ancona but also looking at going from Venice Any advice/recommendations re these routes would also be gratefully received. Many thanks
Charles Chodkowski
We have used the Ancona ferry several times and there has always been many German travellers taking their dogs on the overnight crossing - the deck is sometimes awash with dogwee! Petra
We travel with our labrador regularly to Greece and have found the Patras - Igoumenitsa ferry the best as there is only one overnight, whereas the Venice ferry is two nights. Camping on Board is brilliant as you get electric hook up and usually at that time of year there is plenty of room to exercise your dog. You can take your dog up onto the deck but cant go inside public areas. Usually there are not too many dogs onboard. Dogs are allowed on most beaches apart from in the main resorts. It can be quite hot at that time of year so make sure you park in some shade. Two campsites we wouls recommend are Enjoy Lychnos just south of Parga not too far from the ferry and Vassiliki Beach at Vassiliki on Lefkas. If you would like any further info feel free to ask. Wendytrig
Many thanks for very helpful info - we will book the ferry Ancona to Igoumenitisa and return from Patras. Our dog has travelled extensively but first time for him to Greece - Campsite recommendation really useful, any others gratefully received. Petra
If you are travelling back from Patras and want somewhere to park up overnight in Patras dont park near the Port as lots of immigrants roaming around. The nearest safe parking spot is by the beach. As you come in towards the port, come down to the sea and then turn right and follow the road along and you will see lots of parking areas. An even better stop if you are anywhere between Patras and the Corinth canal is at Diacopte. Follow the road down to the sea, turn left and about half a mile is a large parking area, you will normally see several other motorhomes there and it is next to the sea. Great for dogs. Wendytrig
Thanks for that - we did wonder re wild camping as campsites seem rather expensive - is it generally okay in Greece?

Petra
We came up the Peloponnese from Crete last year in may and they had tightened up on wild camping an awful lot. We were actually met at Pylos by the police just as we were going to park at the harbour which was traditionally a very popular wild camping place and told in no uncertain terms to go to a campsite. A lot of the free camping places had notices saying no overnight parking! The best thing is to park in Taverna car parks and ask the owners who usually have an arrangement with the police! In the spring the police are quite keen on upholding the law but in summer it is too hot, in winter it is too cold and they cant be bothered. There is still a lot of free parking places but you must use your common sense. All the ferry companies have some deal with campsites and it is worth asking at the reception on the boat for details. Happy travelling.
Wendytrig
Again many thanks for all the info - really enjoyed exploring the link and gained lots of new knowledge but also useful to know there can be difficulties. For anyone else new to travelling to Greece we spent ages trying to book the ferry from Ancona to Greece on line but encountered lots of problems and in the end 'phoned London agents - Viamare - so helpful and the cost was less than the one quoted on line. Received ferry tickets to-day so now planning our route - what a wonderful life!
Petra
For future reference unless you are travelling in peak season it is more worthwhile to book at the Ferry port as the ferry companies often have special offers and always want your business so they will quote lower prices than the one next door. There are lots of ferries to Greece from Ancona so really you dont need to worry about not getting on one. If you are going down the bottom of the Peloponnese to Gytheio which is a lovely town then Mani Beach is well worth staying at and good for dogs, as you can walk directly on to the beach which is huge, great for windsurfing as well. It well worth visiting Pylos as it is a great town and if you do go you should definitely visit the castle. There are a couple of sites at Gialova lagoon, we stayed at Camping Erodios, a bit regimented but OK with nice views across the bay to Pylos, and close to the nature reserve.
