external temperature gauge

Our new fifer S on a Citroen Relay comes minus an external temp

gauge,I have done a lot of research on the net but I have to say

I'm no clearer now than when I began. Has anyone retro fitted

such a thing? and perhaps more importantly, how happy were you

with the results? Thanks in anticipation. C.

I have fitted Int?Ext Temp gauge on both my 'vans. Left the one on first van when I sold it. The batteries seem to last forever. No problems in a dozen years in total.

The internal sensor is usually in the head unit with a long very thin lead to the external one. Finding a big enough hole to get the sensor through the bulkhead is fun as it may be up to10mm across. I stuck the ex sensor to the engine air pipe before it goes into the air cleaner as I am mainly interested if temperature is near freezing with danger of black ice. On hot days it still reads ambient air temp until you stop when it reaches spectacular numbers. Camping over night in freezing weather its usually 8 degrees c warmer inside than under the bonnet.

Before buying check out where the head unit will fit and not be in the way.

Positioning of the internal sensor is also important.  I need to move mine as it is fixed to the wood in the over-cab and reads about 3-4 degrees colder than the ambient 1inch away from the wood.  I suspect in sun it will be even more inaccurate in the other direction. Pity it was a handy location.

Hi

We had this problem with our van - no external temperature gauge. Can't remember who but someone on this Forum solved the problem for us. We went to B&Q and bought a £36 domestic weather station, only a small one (no wind-speeds or extras) just internal/external temperature and humidity gauge. The wifi sensor which, under normal circumstances goes outside the house, we positioned in the gas locker and the internal one we carry around in the dashboard pocket in the cab (not in the windscreen!). It's more the external temperature we're interested in and we check this a number of times with other people's gauges and have found it to be very accurate. It's such a novelty, we take it into the house when not using it in the van!

A quick google showed a price range from a fiver upwards. Top end £66 with all the whistles and bells.

Despite the problems with sun etc I keep the display unit on the dash where it is easy to see under way. Running in hot weather the ventilation system keeps air moving and probably a tolerably accurate interior reading. The precise higher figures are not critical but a degree or two around freezing I really want to know about.

Do you mean a sensor to wire into the main control panel because it has this feature?

Morning Brambles,

Thanks for your reply. No ,I mean to fit a sensor and

display independent of the van electrics. I would prefer some sort of

wifi arrangement rather than passing cables etc through the

bulkhead. Best wishes .C.

If you search google they come up with a lot. It is really a case of what takes your fancy and you think will look neat for you. Lidl occassionlly get them in and their weather stations when they have then seem to represent good value for money.

If you do a search for 'inside outside thermometers' you will get a range of cheap wired ones.

If you search Google for 'thermometer clock' http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=thermometer+clock&hl=en&scoring=r you get a range of all sorts.

You can also buy one for cars from most good motorfactors "gives inside and outside temp with low temp alarm",

Are available in Lidl and Aldi from time to time,

They are available in all the big supermarkets in France. Great instructions on fitting "stick on" and placement of outside pickup.

Regards,

Brendan

Mmm, looks like they're going to be £9.99 at my Lidl. 8-)

And would wonder where to mount the external sensor as it looks to be a bit of a lump. ;-)

There are two different temp gauges for sale at Lidl's over the next week or so. Wait for it..... one at £3.99 and the other at.....no prizes for guessing correctly £9.99.

Marvin, thanks for that info. I couldn't see the cheaper ones on the Lidl website.

Maybe "our" Lidl won't be selling the cheaper ones anyway.

I called in on Thursday hoping to buy some of the doormats advertised on t'internet but they weren't supplied to our store.

Shame really, as I had to pay 3 times the price at Poundstretcher. :'(

Hi .The Lidl £9.99 unit has a wireless radio link to the sensor . The £3.99 one has a connecting wire to the sensor.

Brian B.

Yes, thats right. I wanted one with the connecting wire. I've had one with the wireless radio link, worked ok for a while, then croaked on me.
