Davfow
I have skimmed the forum and could not find a thread for this so please excuse me if this is a duplicate thread. We have not caravanned before and are looking for a van to go with our Vauxhall Insignia 2.0l 160BHP Diesel. Having checked the specs on this it has a towing limit of 1370kg (i believe, as I have also read that the max braked weight for this car is 1600kg). On checking the ads for a van I am having difficulty finding a 4 berth that weighs below 1370kg. I have about £8,000 available to spend but the difficulty is every time I try to check the MIRO & MTPLM of a van I cannot find any info for vans of the age I am looking at; even the buyers guide on out&aboutlive only goes down to 2007. Is there a repository of specs online which gives the weights of caravans to make it easier to match a van to my car?
Guest Peter Sharpe
Many people are indebted to this website for its archive of weights and dimensions. I can't guarantee that they are 100% accurate in every case, but I often turn to it when I am stuck.www.cuddles.abelgratis.net/vandata.htm Peter SharpeEditor of Caravan Motorhome & Camping mart
Mr. Grumpy
MIRO is also known as Kerb Weight I believe, this is the weight of your car ready to go but without cargo as opposed to MTPLM which is the maximum weight when loaded with passengers and luggage. If you divide the MIRO of your car by 100 and multiply by 85 this will be the maximum advised weight you should tow, not the legal maximum. Have a look at the two following web sites. http://www.caravantrekker.nl/whattowcar/index.php http://www.caravanfinder.co.uk/index.html Both give lots of information about towing. MiRO.Please note the use of the lower-case i. This is a term used correctly as Mass in Running Order. This denotes as from the factory with only the items fitted at the factory. It seldom includes a battery or gas supply. There is a new and revised MiRO/MTPLM definition currently being used but it is to do with habitation inclusion in particular with regards to fluid in water tanks. MTPLM is Maximum Technical Permissible Load Mass, the maximum that the caravan is allowed to weigh when being towed. Kerbweight/Kerbside Weight is confined is to the tow vehicle and is in accordance with EU Directive 95/48/EC (look in the Blue Pages of Practical Caravan Magazine). The DfT are now jumping on the bandwagon (suddenly realised we are in Europe & dictated to) with their 'Spanner in the Works'. Your calculation is two inputs. Take the kirbweight and x by 85% on the calculator, bingo.
