nightrider
Does anyone out there use a van for work or business? have you ever had it broken into and equipment you use for work or in connection with your business stolen?
Basil
No but my neighbour had a brand new exhaust fitted to his work Transit and overnight it was removed and stolen! None of us heard or saw a thing! Bas
nightrider
How these guys do it is amazing, the big thing now is stealing domestic fuel oil from rural locations which apparently can be used in diesel engined cars and vans.
Basil
Yes this is a real worry, I have relatives who are petrified to have their tank topped up as they fear having £750 worth of the oil put into the tank is inviting trouble. Apparently the culprits are following the tankers from their depot's to where they deliver and then returning to steal it when they think the coast is clear. The police suggest alarms but as most of these properties are very rural there is not always someone close at hand to realise that there is a problem. My relatives are looking to install CCTV that connects to the internet and can be monitored from their smartphone along with an alarm dialer that will alert them to possible problems occuring, at which point they can check the monitors and inform the police if necessary. nightrider
I was listening to the Jeremy Vine show the other day on radio 2 and some of the tales told by his listeners were horrific, some of them had been hit twice within weeks losing thousands of litres of oil. Guest pelmetman
This is one of the reasons I only buy 500 litres at a time................. and the fact that I'm tight :D Plus with the log burner we only use a fraction of the oil our neighbours do 8-)

What was not mentioned on the Jeremy Vine program was that for aroung £20 off e-bay you can buy a fuel dye although this will not stop the thefts it will make the fuel unsaleable and useless in running a vehicle on the stolen fuel the same a red diesel .When my son started on his own after finishing his appretership as a carpenter we think he was followed off site after loading up his tools in his van and followed home then during the night came back removed the rear window of his van and stole all his tools after he had replaced them he had the back windows sealed up but also used to put pieces of plywood with nails knocked through them in the gravel around his van at night so if the theives came back again hopefully they would walk on the nails and stick in their feet . Yes and yes but not for many years, we now use estate cars or in my case a 4x4 to carry mainly engineers hand tools so not as obvious as a van and I aint putting a "no tools left in van overnight" sticker on me new 4x4 thats for sure :-D
