Pister
Have recently booked dealer to fit a bought stand-alone microwave in Autocruise spare head-height locker/cupboard. Then read warning in 'Practical Motorhome' (Jan 2011 - p197) about "most microwaves not being suitable for use in MHomes... and warranty may be invalidated". Would appreciate any advice/experience anyone has re this potential problem.
PJay
Don't know about invalidating the warranty, but have you considered that the Mwave is probably at face height? Our van had provision for one, but not being very tall, I would not have wanted to pull hot things from it. PJay
silverback
Hi Pister not really much help..but here goes, i read some where it is to do with the air circulation around the microwave, there has to be a certain amount of gap around the MV that is why stand alone MV's are unsuitable, however you could buy a smaller one, dont know anything about invalidating the warranty sorry jonathan
pepe63xnotuse
Personally I'd also want to be really sure that the locker was up to the job.. (..as a microwave is a fair bit heavier than a couple of boxes of breakfast cereal (lol) )
Pister
Thanks for that. Yes, am aware of height problem re pulling hot stuff out above head but prepared to cope with that. Worried about legality tho'.
Pister
Thanks for reply. Yes am aware of air circulation problem but assured by dealer that it wouldn't be an issue (???)!!!
colin
Tell the dealer you will be fitting it yourself then ask about suitability :-S
Mel B
The short answer is to ask Practical Motorhome to explain exactly what they meant by saying that. It may be to do with the weight, or the ventilation requirements. But they may be thinking more of the electrical side of things - such as putting in a socket to plug the microwave into, or in the case of a 12v microwave, connecting it directly to the wiring system. flicka
I can not see where Practical Motorhome are coming from !So many new Motorhomes & Caravans are available on the market with Microwaves fitted as standard or as an option. If the Microwave manufacturers' warranty was invalidated due to them not being suitable for Motorhomes/Caravans, it would imply that the Motorhome manufacturer could be at risk of prosectution in the event of injury to a third party or loss of the "van".i.e. If a Microwave manufacturer deemed his product not fit for a specific purpose, it could well be construed that a Motorhome / Caravan manufacturer fitting that appliance in his product would be grossly negligent. Not a risk a M/h/Cv manufacturer would take IMHO.Suggest you have a look at Microwave models fitted by manufacturers, they MAY just have different warranty terms or specific installation instructions applicable to Motorhomes / Caravans. Dave Newell
I don't know but I suspect the warranty in question might be the one applying to the microwave on the grounds that it was designed to be used in a house and not a movable vehicle. lennyhb
Microwave start up current is far higher that running current. Cheap microwaves on start up draw about twice or more their rated cooking power, more expensive ones with inverter technology it's about 30 - 50% more. So if you put a too bigger one in you will trip the supply best to use a 500W at most 650W.
thebishbus
Hi, If a microwave developed a fault under warranty, and was returned to the supplier, how would they know where it had been used. We used to repair microwaves, amongst other things in my business, never asked anyone where they had used them 8-) Brian B.
thebishbus
PS. I can see no problem using a microwave in a motorhome, provided that it has adequate ventilation. If it is inside a cupboard, it maybe advisable to line the cuboard with foil or other waterproof material to prevent steam penetration into the trim. Brian B.
