cyclops2
Hi, I'm looking for help again. I can't lock my rear door from the inside. There is a handle to unlock but the only way I can lock is by key from the outside. There is a round space obviously where another handle was. I have a 1998 Autosleeper Duetto and have contacted A/S who say it was a Ford part. Ford dealer says Transit of that date had no means of locking from inside Pete

Ford dealer says Transit of that date had no means of locking from inside Pete I have a Symbol, almost the same as yours & I get paranoid about security. As well as a Thatcham alarm, I have Harrison deadlocks fitted to all 4 doors. At night if wild camping in dodgy places I lock the cab doors & the side door with the Harrisons but on the rear doors which I can't obviously lock from inside I have fitted a stainless steel eye plate on the edge of each door through which I drop the hasp part of a wide mouth padlock. I have cut off the main part of the padlock leaving a strong 'U' bolt which can pulled up quickly for an emergency exit. The stainless steel eye plates can be obtained from marine stockists. An extra bit of security I use are fitted wooden pieces which are jammed in to the sliding plastic windows which makes it impossible to slide the windows back even if the catches are smashed. I know it's impossible to make a 'van impenetrable but I have gone a long way to make it very hard for the scum. Hope this helps, Mike Melson. Tony Jones
cyclops2 - 2011-02-03 3:20 PM Ford dealer says Transit of that date had no means of locking from inside On my old 1989 Transit, you could open the rear door, "lock" it with the key whilst open, then slam it shut from inside and it stayed locked. That much at least should still have been possible on your later model?
spospe
We used to have a 1999 Duetto without central locking and the method was ... To unlock, reach into the round hole on the driver's side rear door and flip the catch up. To lock, either use the key from outside, or from the inside, flip the catch down as above. There never was a 'handle' fitted at any time.
cyclops2
Thanks all for your advice. I've had some confusing answers from elsewhere. Ford dealer says before 2000 transits did not have means of locking rear doors rom inside. I had previously spoken to A/S who said it was a Ford part. This morning have spoken to A/S again was told it was a white plastic catch and to take the panel off it might have fallen inside. I only need the catch for locking. To the left of the round hole is a handle for unlocking. I'll take the panel off as soon as it stops raining
