Daves
Thinking of a tour of NZ. Motorhome hire or car hire?? We're Motorhomers in Uk but appreciate the limitations (parking in town, buying provisions, setting up site, etc etc etc). Alternative is car hire - accommodation pre-booked in Motels, food on tap, easier parking in town etc etc etc! What would you do? Dave S
paulmold
My sister and brother-in-law are over there at the moment. 3 weeks touring south island in motorhome and two weeks north island in hire car staying in B&B's and hotels - best of both worlds. We spent two months there, approx one month on each island - and it really wasn't long enough ! (Not sure what you mean by " limitations " ?) Plenty of good sites, from very basic to 'four star'. Excellent country for motorhome touring - quiet roads - easy parking - lovely scenery. We booked just one hotel, for the night we arrived - then didn't book anything else - didn't need to. We went Feb / March which is end of main season over there.. If you use search function you will find plenty more info about N.Z. touring. Would love to do it all again. bigmoney2
Toured NZ by motorhome last year and would defo reccommend it. As for towns, they aren't like the UK, they are a lot smaller, The only places you might have a problem could be Auckland, we didn't park here in the van we had, as we went in with friends by car. Did drive through it a few times though. You can easily tour by car as there are lots of places to stay but you'll miss out on dept of conservation sites (DOC) basic sites in amazing places. A lot of the campsites also have other accomodation e.g chalet type rooms and backpackers rooms. Vans can be hired in many shapes and sizes, some no bigger than a car. Ours was a 2berth, 5.5metres van conversion with loo/shower. We had no problems even drove into Wellington and parked at the museum no problem. Christchurch we stayed on a site in the city and got the bus into the centre, For provisions a lot places are out of town with plenty of parking, even in small places we didn't have any problems. If you are motorhomers here I would go the motorhome route for sure. We booked flights through trailfinders with stopovers in Hong Kong each way. Then found a hire company on the internet with a van that suited us and emailed them direct. It all went very smoothly til the volcanoe in Iceland errupted just before we were due to return and all flights out of NZ were suspended due to the stopovers being full !! If you want any more info just ask.Jules
How Much
We toured both Islands by car, and i have to say we didnt see that many 'motorhomes'. Campervans yes - lots, but nothing of any size, baring one HUGE RV, which parked alongside us and blocked the light out! However you choose to tour NZ, i guarantee you'll have a great time. colin
Whilst on the south island, due to cock up by agents we ended up with a large six berth motorhome instead of a two berth poptop, never had any problems with using it at all.
