gingerbenn
Does anyone have any advise on taking our campervan via southampton to Melbourne, even with fares, it still seems to come out cheaper than renting a van for 3/4 months Nov11-Feb12, or can you recommend a buy and sell back company in any cities on the eastern side of Oz, many thanks for all suggestions. Brian Kirby
Have you checked your insurance, and whether you can legally drive a UK registered van in Aus?
flicka
Hi gingerbenn & welcome to the forum. Australia had very rigourous import regulations relating to cleaning of Used Vehicles for import, not sure if they still apply - but worth checking & including in your calculations if still necessary. We looked at shipping a Jaguar to the Brother in Law, 20 odd years ago & the quote for cleaning then was >£700 & on top of that, it would have required additional cost of Inspection by the Australian Consulate, before shipping. So if the regulations still apply costs relating to a Motorhome will be substantial as all Tanks, water system, bedding, mattresses, etc.. will also need to be done. le canichot depang
We too thought about taking our van to Oz one day in the future and just to see how much it would cost we contacted one of the roll on roll off trans-atlantic shippers, we received a quote of nearly £4000, that was from Bristol to Freemantle (near Perth), however, you would then have the cleaning, I think the engine must be steam cleaned also, you were not allowed to transport personal belongings in the vehicle and then you still had to get yourselves over there too! So in reality unless you were going to do a years touring over there it would probably be more cost effective to buy and sell when over there - but the idea does have appeal! There are a lot of shippers out there and it may even be possible to travel on the same vessel as you van, most large freight ships have about a dozen cabins for occupation, but again the cost is not cheap at about £3,500 one way per person, for that it is all inclusive with meals (not drinks), and most have a small pool & gym, you eat with the officers in their restaurant and the journey takes about 30-36 days

Hi, Welcome to the forum. We looked into shipping our van to OZ as it would fit in an over sized container what ever that is. We decided against it as the import regs are very demanding and they will steam clean the engine which was a no go for us with the 2003 Fiat Ducato 2.8jtd with the computerised engine management system. We are in Perth until mid April and I could make some enquiries for you regarding the buy back system if it would be of help to you. Don
JeffersonCampervan
Don Madge - 2011-02-26 11:05 PM We looked into shipping our van to OZ as it would fit in an over sized container what ever that is. Don We shipped our (very small) Winnebago from Canada to Bremerhaven in an oversized container ( "hitop" - 40 ft. long, a little over 8 ft. height at doorway). Shared the container with a BMW X5. Pics of the RV in this container are at: http://travel.jeffersoncampervan.com/shipping.html As you can see, it was very tight! here's a shipping company dimensions table: http://www.nordana.com/Equipment/ByName/40_High_Cube.aspx

postnote
We did Australia and New Zealand Nov 2010 through to Jan 2011 in a hired camper. We hired from Kea and recommend them. The daily rental drops the longer you hire it and depending on time of year can get some good deals. Kea were at the NEC this year and promoting there company over here so a good deal can be done. Enjoy Aussie we did and hope to go back soon. :D
