rupert123
Last year our Visa Debit worked at all fuel pumps and shops where they took cards. A few shops still do not take cards but it is nowhere near as bad as it was a few years ago. It was a surprise that we still came across small supermarkets that on occasion did not take cards but they now seem to be in a minority. All campsites we stayed at took cards. lennyhb
Haven't come across any garages in recent years that won't take cards but in the areas we have been even the biggish supermarkets will only take German Debit cards. Rarely use sites but the odd one we have stayed on it was cash only. Mastercard is more popular than Visa.
Brian Kirby
rupert123 - 2011-04-04 3:30 PM ................. All campsites we stayed at took cards. But, to be safe, don't assume this means they all will. We have visited a number that don't.
ollybear
Hi, it is by far not as common as it is in England to use credit cards in Germany. They will always be accepted at filling stations and bigger retail- or supermarket chains (but not in discount shops like Aldi or Lidl). The usual way to pay is by debit card or by cash. Debit cards (with maestro symbol) are being accepted even in small businesses, in restaurants and in the discount chains. If I was a tourist in Germany I would draw some cash to be on the safe side and to pay for smaller amounts and test my debit card at the first opportunity to make sure it works abroad. peterandlinda
Hi Germany is (perhaps surprisingly) very much a cash economy but you can use UK debit and credit cards to get cash from German cash machines, but you do have to pay transaction fees. Our solution, so far, is a Caxton Euro card which we top up online and then use to get Euros from the machine. You have to remember (or check regularly) what credit is left but it works for us.
