laimeduck
Any suggestions for places to stay in Normandy, early June?We are only away for a week, so don't want to go as far as Brittany. We have been to the Invasion Beaches area before, & quite fancy an evening in Rouen, but otherwise we are open to suggestions. Will have cycles, but 10k (on the flat) max each way!Jeremy

rupert123
Etretat is a great spot for a couple of days, famous white cliffs and good walking, nice small town. Their is a municipal campsite right on the edge of town with an aire next to it, aire is gated and works on a coin barrier. Honfleur nice town but the aire is a M/H slum, nice site just outside town. Montreuil sur Mer is worth a visit, more Northern France than Normandy, but still worth a day, pleasant small site almost under town walls, facilities bit old but OK. You can walk around the walls and many other easy walks in the area without moving the van. Les Andelays site of Richard the Lionhearts castle has a very good site right next to the Seine, ACSI, within walking distance of town. Mont St. Michel and St. Malo at the limit of your visit I guess but both well worth a look.
Guest 1footinthegrave
Agree with Rupert above, Etretat, nice aire, but also................. Le Touquet, not that far from Calais, on the coast, a very swanky area with housing to die for, must be the French millionaires second home destination. The Aire is actually down by the estuary / marina. Not at the small airport we were led to believe. It is however signed. Le Touquet center itself is not M/home friendly with parking prohibited for M/homes in the main ( upmarket ) sea front area. But the aire is very quiet agreeable safe spot, and just a short walk / bicycle ride into the center, from memory I think 5 Euro. As for the other posters comment about Honfluer we disagree somewhat, yes it is a bit of a large car park, but it is in close proximity to the charms of Honfluer, electric hook up included in the fee ( 8 Euro last year ) our only complaint was the large amount of dog poo in and around Honfluer itself when we went in May, I came away an expert on Dog poo types, but friends who went in September tell me they are getting on top of this now with dedicated Dog poo toilets. :-|
LordThornber
Etretat, lovely place, site or Aire, (24hrs only on the Aire), super walks, unbeatable spot for some painting , etching etc if that's your bag. Easy cycling. Honfleur, it's nice but it's done in a half day at the most, disgusting Aire, nice but pricey site just out of the Town. Beautiful in the evening, dining around the basin and not over priced. A bit further on but well worth it is Falaise, (Bill The Conquerers place). Lovely town and Municipal 5 mins away with wifi included. Not as cheap as it was but then what is? Martyn
kelly58
St-Valery-en-Caux is a nice resort ,but the aire can get a bit crowded , if you like watching big boats then the aire at La-Mailleraye-sur Seine is nice and quiet there is a small aire at Deauville which only holds 6 units , but there is ample parking at the marina just watch out for people coming around the motorhomes for parking fee's they do not always look legit and target non French for money.Just south of Rouen there is a small aire at Oissel in a nice quiet area near a park and river. You might find this link I kidnapped from another forum handy. https://picasaweb.google.com/104053866066524016059?authkey=Gv1sRgCMKW4YLfi6KuhgE
robertandjean
Hi, The link provided by Kelly 58 is really good and would ask that those who say aires are just overcrowded car parks take some time to look at the photos on here. Re suggestions for other aires then in Dept 14 Beuvron-en-Auge is a beautiful village but note aire now charges (6€), but La Riviere-st-Sauveur, near Honfleur, is still free to stay overnight. In dept 76 Montville is a nice place to stop over (free parking, services 3€) whilst La Maillery-sur-Seine is always worth a visit but note now charges 5€/night plus services (electric hook-ups were being installed here last November so may now be operational and therefore charge may have changed) Le Touquet now charges more than 5€, think maybe 10, but again a nice place to stay. Barryd999
This is a cracking Aire on the Siene, beteen Rouen and the coast. About an hour or less from Honfleur. Plenty of space and grass to sit and watch the boats go sailing by and there are some big ones! Taken from the excellent campoing infos site mentioned above. Ive translated it for you. http://www.microsofttranslator.com/BV.aspx?ref=IE8Activity&a=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.campingcar-infos.com%2FFrancais%2Faire.php%3Fnumid%3D1621
laimeduck
Thanks for all your replies. Sites &Aires that are now on my list are: Camping St Claire, Neufchatel-en-Braye Mailleraye-sur-Seine Etretat LesAndelys Falaise Le Touquet and one other yet to be decided. A round trip of about 500 miles from Calais. This will be our first introduction to Aires so we're looking forward to the novelty. (We've been Caravaners & Campers all over Europe for the last 40 years so are not novices) I'll let you know how we fare! laimeduck
Off on Tuesday to hit the tunnel early Wednesday. Typical - because we are going, the weather is deteriorating in that part with storms & rain forecast - a largish low building off the West of Ireland :'( Oh well.... more vin rouge & croissants, less walking!*-) Jeremy the L'AimeDuck

Mike B.
There's a nice aire at Cleres just south of Rouen and last time we were there it was free including electricity. The village is lovely with a bird sanctuary/mini wildlife park with flamingos wallabies etc and a castle all within walking distance of the aire. Couple of nice bars etc as well If you go onto the camping car info as link above, I have put some comments on this aire on the site a while ago with photographs Mike
laimeduck
Thanks Flicka & Mike & others Both your suggestions will be added to the itinerary especially Cleres - probably our first stop. Gum boots & oilskins packed & its off we trot! :D (It will be good to get away from this madhouse of a forum for a few days - hope it calms down by the time of our return *-) ) Jeremy the L'AimeDuck
Retread24800
Just to get the rest of you in the mood try watching this You tube Motor caravan club member Calais to Boulogne on the old road much more scenic than the Autoroute and if you keep your eyes open there's good parking for Camping Cars. He's posted lots of other M/H based videos. Mainly of interest to them Up North ;-)

You are right it is a nice aire, it is about 30km north, not south of Rouen, and you can catch the train into that city rather than battle the traffic. A few kms nearer Rouen the aire at Montville is also worth a visit being near town centre and overlooking parkland. Free to stay, services 3€ but also free wi-fi.
