Guest Tracker
Generally just a field with like minded campers of all sorts and rally type hosts to meet and greet and answer any questions and provide help if needed. Often a small marquee with optional games / entertainment / meetings / chat times / coffee etc. If it's not your scene no pressure to join in but in our view generally the most friendly form of camping available - and generally inexpensive too. Own Sanitation means just that! No loos no showers no washrooms or anything else on site except a fresh water tap(s), a waste water point and often just a big pit for loo waste. Very basic generally but good fun and always someone to give advice, help, chat, have a laugh etc! Why not try it for a weekend and if you don't enjoy it - as many would not - then don't do it again - but many do enjoy it and for them it is their only form of camping. Each to their own - there is no right and wrong! Enjoy!
malc d
The C&CC Temporary Holiday Sites are organised by the club regions and special interest groups. I've not been on one but you can find details if you Google " Camping and Caravan Club temporary holiday sites".
Robinhood
robkilby - 2011-05-03 8:09 PM ...what are they like ? ...they vary tremendously, depending on the location. May be like a large CL with simply a tap, rubbish disposal and dump point, or may be very much like a standard site, with access to facilities. The clue is usually in the listing. ...what happens ? ....you turn up, show your membership card, book in, and pitch. (generally, if you don't know when you will be leaving, the membership card will be retained and returned when you leave and pay). Some have organised entertainment, in halls or marquees, but no pressure is brought to bear to join in if you don't want to. ...when it says " own san adv"...what does it mean ? ( partic if it sounds like it is on a " proper" site ? Remember, these sites will accept tents as well. Means you need your own loo - if it is on a proper site, you may or may not have access to the facilities, especially if it is on a "rally field". In addition, such facilites as there are may be a little "overrun" if the meet is popular. Any experience most welcome...apols if this would have been better posted elsewhere We use them a lot during summer. They provide some very good locations, don't (in general) require booking (we've only ever failed to get on one, at a bank holiday), and are of course, usually cheap. If the weather forecast is good, you can make a last minute decision, and generally rely on being OK. As an up-to-date example, we've just had 3 nights over the last weekend at Silverdale overlooking Morecambe Bay - £6.50 a night in the Rally Field of Gibraltar Farm campsite, with use of toilets (but not showers (or should I say shower *-) ) included. There was a marquee and various bits of entertainment going on - we pitched well away and were able to escape the wedding celebrations (lol) . Some get very busy, some are quiet, and there are some cracking locations (Brixham and Wareham in the town for instance)

colin
Are you talking temp sites or as I suspect CL's? If it's CL's, then I would say this is why we renewed our C&CC membership this year. On our recent trip to forest of Bowland we spent all bar two nights on CL's, it can be a lottery as to wether you get a good one but generaly we prefer them as they are small and often tend to be on a farm or in a field at back of a village pub. oldlowie
Temporary Holiday Sites are the only reason we renew our membership with the Camping and Caravanning Club every year - we never use their over-priced Club sites. They are great for weekends or stopovers as there is no need to book with most of them, best to ring the mobile no. provided first though, just in case they are full. They have to be strict on numbers to adhere to Club rules, so they WILL turn you away if necessary. We reckon just 4 nights on a THS saves us enough for the annual membership fee B-) Their CS's (not CL's) are pretty good, too...
